This book starts with our narrator having kidnapped an astronaut he once ā€œknewā€ and becomes part character study and part commentary on our current world. It‘s entirely told in dialogue, which I found to be an interesting structure. I read this in one sitting and found it intriguing. I think it‘ll sit with me for a while.

Today‘s remaindered book haul. I got both of these for $4, so I consider this a win!

I started reading the Eggers book while browsing and drinking some coffee from the connected coffeeshop. Despite the extremely nondescript title the first 10 pages made me laugh so I decided to buy it!

If you‘ve read either of these, what did you think? If you haven‘t, which would you pick first?

BarbaraJean I haven‘t read either, but just listened to a wonderful interview with Eula Biss from the On Being podcast (definitely recommend!), so now I want to track down this book of hers! Dave Eggers is hit or miss for me, but for $4, I‘m jealous of your haul! šŸ˜Š 7y
Pruzy @BarbaraJean I always enjoy a good podcast recommendation. Thanks! I‘ve only read The Circle when it first came out, but considering how prescient it was I‘m wanting to read more by him. I just read in the NYTimes today that Facebook wants to build a company town in Menlo Park. 7y
callielafleur I LOVED On Immunity. Beautifully written, amazingly informative. I can't part with my copy. 7y

NCNY The Eggers is weird but I liked it. There is a short exchange about the word irregardless that I loved. 7y

Quick and riveting read. Interestingly, the story is told 100% through dialogue and captures the characters well this way. I appreciate how Dave Eggers' books are all different from one another. Always makes for an unexpected and enjoyable journey!

2017 #32 novel audio this was an amazing audiobook. The story comes from a very angry place and may be upsetting but it was amazingly well done with stagecraft and individual voices for each character. Highly recommended. +

#recommendsday This is one of the books I never would have read without #ArmchairAudies. It was nominated in a category I judged. There are multiple narrators, but MacLeod Andrews is principle. I found the whole thing fascinating with just the right amount of mental imbalance. At less than 6 hours, it's a great choice when you want to be able to listen to something over a short period of time. I still think of it often two years later.

BethFishReads I've tried Eggers and failed a couple times. Glad this was a winner for you! 8y
Gulfsidemusing I'm with @BethFishReads and @Ebooksandcooks - just can't seem to get into Eggers. Haven't tried his books on audio though. Wonder if it would make a difference.... 8y

This book is about a young man who is deeply disappointed that the world doesn't provide him with great adventure, success and meaning. He blames the world. The world is already made, you're forced into it, it's cold and corrupt. All there is to do is to demolish it. The questions this book explores is the same existential dread that drives young men into extremism and terrorism. The protagonist resorts to kidnapping people.
