Pickpick

Gritty, colorful, surprising and by turns upsetting and uplifting. The story of two kids with really hard home lives, growing up on Oahu who find each other, fall in love, and just maybe save each other. #BBRCTeenAngstIndieYANovel #PopSugar2022ABookByAPacificIslander @LibrarianRyan

LibrarianRyan Nice. I‘ve not heard of this one. 2y

Tonight's a good night to shut the TV off and just read.💕 This book has been really good so far, and I enjoy that it's written in little snippets of their lives as they grow. Interested to see how SP ends the story... 🤔

Mehso-so

A Romeo&Juliet retelling w poc & trans characters? Sounds amazing but fell short. A lot of the difficult topics dealt w (see triggers below) weren't handled as well as I hoped & (MAJOR SPOILER WARNING) the trans character attempts suicide. He regrets the attempt, but still troubling considering the portion of trans youth who are suicidal. Might be a great read for some people but there was too much that felt off for me to give it more than a so-so

rachelsbrittain Trigger warnings for: homophobia, transphobia, suicidal ideation and attempted suicide, child abuse, alcoholism, drug use, rape, sex work, sex slavery, and eating disorders 7y
rachelsbrittain I really debated even posting this (because I don't love posting negative reviews), but I didn't want anyone who might find a lot of these topics triggering to go into it expecting one thing only to find another. Hopefully this might help someone when deciding whether to read this book. 7y
GondorGirl Thanks for the review. With that many big issues your warning is really helpful. 7y

GondorGirl @rachelsbrittain I always appreciate when people give an honest review. I might not agree with what they say, but I get more groom honest reviews then from people who are afraid to rock the boat or potentiality hurt someone's feelings. Plus, your review was tactfully done. 😀 7y
rachelsbrittain @GondorGirl haha well thank you very much! I definitely agree about honest reviews-- its just a little more nerve wracking when you're the one posting the less-than-glowing ones 😅 7y

Pickpick

This book was intense & pretty difficult to read. Patel didn‘t sugarcoat the struggles of her characters, which, unfortunately, are the struggles of many teens around the world. Yet I saw it as a tribute to them and their perseverance and strength. It‘s an intensely emotional read that is going to make plenty of people uncomfortable, but I think that‘s an important part of the reading experience. And I think everyone should read it. ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
