Two men, Randall and Jaffe, discover a mystical place called the sea of quiddity One wants to use it for evil and one wants to protect it. Their feud will last decades and destroy lives in utterly gnarly ways. Barker never shies away from the body horror. If there is a totally 80‘s horror fantasy novel this is it. Day 1 of 21 days of horror.

I've been a Barker fan for half my life and this is my least favourite of his by far.

Barker has said in interviews that this novel was the hardest to write of all his books, I can appreciate this, he never gave up and I suppose there's loads of people out there who see this as a masterpiece; i can appreciate that too - but this one just isn't for me.

KathyWheeler I have started this book countless times over the years but, although I‘ve enjoyed what I was reading while I reading it, I‘ve never gotten past the second chapter. I put it down and never pick it up again. I‘ve said that this is the year I finish it. 4y

Reggie Noooooooooo, lol, this and the next one in the series, Everville, are my favorites of his. I was even gonna say the worst villain from yesterday was Kissoon. @Kathywheeler I hope you power through. 4y

KathyWheeler @Reggie I don‘t understand why I don‘t pick it up again after I put it down. Every time I picked it up I was enjoying it. I have both it and Everville but I feel I can‘t read Everville until I read this one. 4y

#Rocktober Day 10: I used to be such a huge fan of Clive Barker‘s #WelcomeToTheJungle type of novels. This happens to be one of my faves but it‘s nearly twenty years old and falling apart at the seams - will have to find me a newer/sleeker version.

Reggie No, I haven‘t? But I have read The Damnation Game, all 3 Books of Blood and the Imajica series. Hate to say it but I don‘t think he has much left to go. He was on the Nerdist podcast saying he had gone to the dentist and went into toxic shock as a result of bacteria being loosened and putting him in a coma where he had 3 almost life ending strokes. He‘s ok now but he was in that coma for a couple of months. 7y

GatheringBooks @Reggie oh no. i didn‘t know about this. that explains the infinitely long gap between novels. i have the imajica series - haven‘t read them yet tho primarily because i am a tad apprehensive about the world-building. abarat was gloriously illustrated, the books are gorgeous, so that helped a great deal. 7y

GatheringBooks @Reggie and yeah apparently there is an illustrated version of weaveworld too, but its prohibitively expensive. 7y

Reggie What he did for Weaveworld and The Great and Secret Show, he tried to do for Imajica and it just felt not as strong, same with Galilee. I want to give the Scarlet Gospels a try though. 7y
