Far and Beyon'
Far and Beyon' | Unity Dow
2 posts | 1 read | 6 to read
For Mara, mother of four, sole provider for her family, life has never been easy. In a community that relies upon traditional magic to cure AIDS, and blames bad luck upon a bewitching curse, women carry a heavy burden as the world changes around them. But in modern Botswana, the tensions are growing as more and more young people adopt white ways and challenge the heavily divided structure of African society. For Mara, it is her children's dismissal of all the ancient magicks that have held families together for generations; for her son Stan it is the opportunities represented by his white teachers and the education system; and for daughter Mosa it is her burgeoning awareness of the inequality of her home, and community. Together they will develop new strengths and define new goals, enabling them all to triumph and travel 'far and beyon'.

Unity Dow is remarkable- YouTube her! Botswana's first female high-court judge, & a human rights attorney focused on women/children's rights. Her first novel is unsurprisingly issues-based.

Following the death of her 2nd brother from AIDS, Mosa tries to navigate a path between the beliefs of her traditional mother & community, & the ideas she's exposed to through school, while resisting the injustices she faces on all sides as a young woman.

rockpools Throughout the book you are told a huge amount about traditional #Botswana society - at times it was a little heavy-handed& felt like an educational text rather than a novel. It was an interesting read though, and I wonder how her later novels develop. #readaroundtheworld (edited) 7y

Currey I was thinking I wanted to stay in Botswana longer too. Do you think I should read Unity Dow's or Bessie Head's book? @RachelO #readaroundtheworld 7y
rockpools @Currey As a good read with wonderful writing, I absolutely loved Maru. F&B was interesting, and probably told you more about life between trad & modern Botswana, but wasn't as good a read. 7y
Currey Thanks - will try Maru 7y
Hooked_on_books I read her second book for this challenge and really enjoyed it. I felt I learned a good bit about Botswana. 7y
