Marya: A Life
Marya: A Life | Joyce Carol Oates
3 posts | 4 read | 7 to read
A deeply intimate psychological portrait of a young woman's tragic childhood, her reinvention as a successful young artist in the literary circles of 1950s New York City, and her struggle to understand and overcome the trauma of her past. Growing up in the confines of Innisfail, a bleak town in upstate New York, bright and curious Marya endures abandonment, betrayal, and loneliness. A college scholarship offers escape, taking her to New York City, where she makes a name for herself in academic and literary circles. But success cannot overcome the damage of her childhood, pain that haunts Maryas personal, professional, and romantic relationships, and has left her unmoored. Psychologically nuanced, rich in insight and emotional complexity, told with the unsettling power of Joyce Carol Oatess gothic novels, Marya: A Life is an intense look into the psyche of a young woman and an illuminating exploration of how the past reverberates throughout our lives.

I really want to discover what so many people love about JCO but she's making it really hard on me with this one 🤨

BarbaraBB I tried several times but the only one I kind of liked by Oates is 4y
LeahBergen I like the cover, though. 😆 4y
Zelma I don‘t care for her either except for Blonde. I adored that book when I read it years and years ago. (edited) 4y
Cathythoughts I loved Blonde too 👍🏻 4y
Reviewsbylola Her books are so hit or miss. Try Blonde (which you can borrow from me but I think you‘ve already read) or 4y

I‘m trying to remember if I‘ve ever liked any books written by this author. I‘m struggling with this one. Must. Keep. Going.

saresmoore Haha! *whispers* Just give up, Sue. Life is too short. 6y
Suet624 @saresmoore I‘ve given up on three books in a row which is REALLY unusual for me. So I‘m reluctant to stop reading this one. But thank you. I love being reminded. (edited) 6y
silentrequiem Another vote for give up. I so not like Joyce Carol Oates as a person so may be biased, though... 6y

Suet624 @silentrequiem What is it I don‘t know about Oates? Why don‘t you like her? 6y
silentrequiem @Suet624 She has said some very problematic things on Twitter. The most recent was in response to a news article about authors from Mississippi, something to the effect of, "People read in Mississippi?" 6y
Suet624 @silentrequiem thanks for the info! 6y
Reviewsbylola I either love or hate JCO. She is way too verbose most of the time. This is a gorgeous cover though! 6y
kspenmoll I only tried one of her novels years ago & did not like it. 6y
BarbaraBB I‘m not a fan too. Most books of het that I read I wanted to literally throw back in her face at one point. I liked the tagged one though. 6y
Suet624 @saresmoore @silentrequiem @Reviewsbylola @kspenmoll @BarbaraBB My peeps! Due to the accumulation of comments I took the leap and put the book aside. Thank you so much for liberating me from my overactive sense of duty. 6y

Mehso-so

I loved/hated this book. The beginning grabbed my attention and I was hooked. There were times I got completely bored, but then it would get better. I did love Marya's character. She had a terrible childhood but ended up successful in her education and career. It bothered me that all her relationships were with married men. By the end of the book, I really just wanted it to be over!

Alwaysbeenaloverofbooks I tried to read several of her books years ago and just didn't like them 😑 7y
huntersmom1977 @Alwaysbeenaloverofbooks You are not alone! I find a lot of people feel the same. Years ago I didn't care for her but now it's my plan to read every book she has written. I think it's because I'm older and I understand her writing now 😊 7y
Alwaysbeenaloverofbooks @huntersmom1977 maybe that's the reason I didn't care for them too... 🙃🙂 7y
