I love Goddard's books & this one did not disappoint. It kept me guessing. His characters are so unique & very believable. Lots of twists & turns kept the pages turning until the very surprise ending. The plot was very calculating & the murderer obscure. All Goddard's books are very well-written and fascinating and sure to hold your interest. I highly recommend this book to those who love historical mystery.

I finished this. That made me glad. It started well, then started to not be good before finishing badly.

When I started this I lost myself in the mannered, formal world of post-WW1 England. The echoes of classic adventure stories I read growing up made it so appealing. Oh my days though how it has dragged. Enduring the advancement is like wading through wet sand in oversized wellies. It‘s a good bedtime read though. I‘ve never had so little trouble nodding off. Onward we go...

Mannered, slow-paced and atmospheric, this reminds me of John Buchan's novels. I loved The 39 Steps when I was growing up so this suits me very well.

Another great masterpiece from Robert Goddard, he is truly the master of telling a great yarn with twists and Suspense evident throughout. This one is set in the years either side of the First World War, and revolves around a murder and the events that led up to it and followed it. Within this we have a trial, great characterisation, plotting and storyline. Robert Goddard does write the most evocative and colourful sentences. I do recommend this.
