Dead Men's Bones
Dead Men's Bones: An Inspector McLean Novel | James Oswald
9 posts | 8 read | 4 to read
The murder/suicide of a prominent Scottish politician and his family brings Edinburgh-based Detective Inspector Tony McLean out to the countryside to investigate. The powers that be want a quick report and then to have the whole thing buried, but McLean believes there's more to the case than meets the eye. The more lies he uncovers, the more McLean comes to realize there is a connection between the influential politician and another case he's working--the body of a man, stark naked and covered from head to toe in fresh tattoos, found in a river to the south of Edinburgh. But investigating the link between the two could have detrimental implications for his career, not to mention his life. As McLean faces the pressure to wrap up the case, he comes face to face with an ancient evil that will put everyone he cares about at risk in Dead Men's Bones, the fourth installment of James Oswald's internationally bestselling series.

I'm really enjoying this series with its mix of authentic-feeling (to this non-cop) police procedural with supernatural elements. I like that Tony McLean 1) will not stop digging on a case until he gets the truth, even when that tenacity is detrimental to his career, 2) cares for the people on his team, 3) his response to the supernatural situations he finds himself in- a mixture of acceptance and exasperation- amuses me.

Leaving a surprisingly chilly Atlanta to go back home to chilly Denver, while reading about winter in Scotland. 🌧☔️❄️🌨

AmyG I‘m in Denver and today the weather changes! Mid 60‘s 🙌🏻 7mo
bookandbedandtea @AmyG We're back home and it's BEAUTIFUL here! The snow has melted- and mid 60s is my favorite. 😊 So much more comfortable (IMO) than the 80s and humidity we had in Southern Alabama. 7mo

Inspector McLean number 4
This was the best one yet of this series. Thank you @EadieB for turning me on to this. And maybe you too @Andrew65 ? A body is found in the gorge, completely covered with fresh tattoos. A rich industrialist kills his family and himself. McLean is assigned the investigation, so he can take the fall, of course. The end of this book had me laughing, but the rest of it certainly didn't. What a book.⬇️

EadieB Glad you enjoyed it! I love this series! 3y
Crazeedi @EadieB I love the "feline army" at the end, I busted up laughing 3y

EadieB @Crazeedi Yes! The cat scenes are pretty funny! 3y
Andrew65 Agree a truly brilliant series. Until the Pandemic called a halt to the Group Reads, Eadie and I and others read these together. Hope to get back to those soon. 3y
Crazeedi @Andrew65 well I'm up to number 5, I dont know how many there are but I'll tag along 3y
EadieB @Crazeedi @Andrew65 The next one for the group read would be 8. The Gathering Dark (2018) 3y
Crazeedi @EadieB well I guess I have a couple more to go! I'll get there, hopefully! 3y
TheSpineView Great job! 👍📖 3y

2021- book 14 Not as good as book 3, I didn‘t find this one as engrossing or believable and I found some of the subject matter (child murder) difficult to read through. But it hasn‘t put me off, I‘m still definitely going to read no.5 in the series. I‘m getting to know the main characters and I want to know what happens to the detective and his team next.

This was meant to be my last book of 18 but ended being 1st of 2019 and v enjoyable read it was. Im slowly getting used to supernatural crime esp when its done well. Tony maclean here back in work after the horrors of his last outing investigates an msp's suicide and the death of a tattooed man. A particularly nasty villain adds to the tension. Slightly flat ending but still a good page turner to start the yr.

Cathythoughts Supernatural crime ..... you will have to tell us more about this genre .. 📖🤔👍🏻 .... sounds interesting 6y
Andrew65 I agree this series does do the supernatural element well. I like the Joe Plantagenet series by Kate Ellis for the same reason. @Cathythoughts 6y
andrew61 @Andrew65 ill have a look for those -thanks Andrew. 6y

Andrew65 @andrew61 Only a short series and quite short books. They are based in a fictional York. 6y
andrew61 @Cathythoughts im no expert cathy but there seems to be crime novels which combine supernatural elements in the detection. I think you like me r in the early stages of the j conolly books (bk 3 sat ready to rd) but later books this seems to be a theme. The tagged series similarly. i like ghost stories and crime stories - do they mix, guess it depends on the bk - i just finished the woman in white + the moonstone both have that feel so its not new☺ 6y
andrew61 @Andrew65 sounds good - ill look them up - i hope you enjoy birdman, definitely not for the faint (fluttery) hearted - i think i read book 6 last year but can't see any news of mo hayder doing anything recently. 6y

I really enjoyed this book for most of the time, enjoying the characters, plotting and way the story was told. However I felt let down by the ending, where I don‘t think everything was resolved and was too much based on the supernatural. As a result I enjoyed the other books in the series much more overall. Just be aware this was only my opinion, others that read it as a Group Read mainly gave it 4.5 Stars or 4 at the least.

andrew61 I'm in a dilemma with the current wave of supernatural themed books as well- i like crime novels and like horror but not sure how well they mix- still ive just borrowed book 4 from the library. 7y
Andrew65 @andrew61 This book reminds me of being at school and finishing a story and saying it was all a dream, I got told off for that for it being a lazy ending. This feels the same using the supernatural seemed too easy and left me with feeling the ending was unsatisfactory - a shame because I enjoyed the rest of the book very much. 7y
andrew61 @Andrew65 did you read Behind her eyes by Sarah pinborough, andrew. I was really enjoying it and had heard reviewers raving about the amazing end but felt that the supernatural element was a bit of a letdown. 7y
Andrew65 @andrew61 No not a book I have read, I wish they wouldn‘t do this though - especially when enjoyed the rest so much. 7y

Starting Dead Men‘s Bones, Book 4 Of The Inspector McLean Series. Always love getting back to books set in Edinburgh, one of my favourite cities. These ones always have a slight element of the supernatural in them.

Moray_Reads Literary Edinburgh gives even literary London a run for its money! 7y

😈😈😈

I had thought I had given up on this paranormal police procedural after book 3, which was a slog. But then I got books 4-6 in the sales and book 4 is definitely back on form!

This series marries Scottish police procedurals (eg Ian Rankin) with paranormal plots. Dead Man's Bones builds up slowly, as a regular but very good police procedural and the more mysterious element is introduced gradually.

Recommended if you like either genres.

Another Inspector MacLean mystery. Great read!
