Blood Strand: A Faroes Novel | Chris Ould
13 posts | 8 read | 5 to read
Having left the Faroes as a child, Jan Reyna is now a British police detective, and the islands are foreign to him. But he is drawn back when his estranged father is found unconscious with a shotgun by his side and someone else s blood at the scene. Then a man s body is washed up on an isolated beach. Is Reyna s father responsible? Looking for answers, Reyna falls in with local detective Hjalti Hentze. But as the stakes get higher and Reyna learns more about his family and the truth behind his mother s flight from the Faroes, he must decide whether to stay, or to forsake the strange, windswept islands for good."

A native Faeroese who grew up & became a detective in England comes back to the islands to see his ill father. He gets sucked into the investigation into his father‘s near-death injuries, a murder, a kidnapping & more. Well-written with realistic dialog & storyline, & kept me guessing. Terrific narrator, but the breaks sometimes were nonexistent. Poor audio editing, but I‘d listen to book 2 because it‘s an excellent story & narrator. ⬇️

Crafting supplies arrived! Hoping to do some audiocrafting tomorrow morning. We‘ve undertaken a huge home project (packing rooms to prepare for renovations) the past 2 days so I need a break

The audio is great. There was some Scandinavian language in it just now so I tried husband‘s amazing skills with “almost” all Scandinavian languages but this one eluded him. Turns out it was Faero-ese! The Norwegians once occupied the islands millennia ago.

wanderinglynn Looks like fun! Hope you will post some photos of your crafts. 4y

A solid book to begin the Faroes series. Was an enjoyable mystery, although it did take a while to get going. Look forward to reading The Killing Bay 😊

I really enjoyed this mystery set in The Faroe Islands. Excellent sense of place and character- the first of 3 mysteries with these characters and I will go on to the next 2. If you like Scandanavian Mysteries- perhaps not quite as dark (but maybe decapitation is a bit dark). Recommended

#DeweysReadathon book 1 from the Faroe Islands this mystery - I saw an article about it in the WallStreet Journal- setting murders on an Island where there aren‘t any! Looks good and I‘ll bet no one else is reading the Faroe Islands!

cathysaid It does sound good. Stacked! 📚 7y

Loved the setting for this book - the Faroes Islands. It's a good police procedural and I liked the investigators. I have book 2 of this series, The Killing Bay. There is a whale-hunting tradition on the Faroes Islands (don't google that) so I can guarantee you that I will be skipping a chapter or two in that one!

Overall a good first in series. Love the locale and the use of Faroese, and the backstory was interesting as well. A couple of minor boo-boos regarding injuries (saying the injury was on the right side and later on the left side, and vice versa), but nothing to dissuade a recommendation if this interests you.

Slight oops moment: at one point, someone is said to have their right shoulder dislocated. Later, it's the left shoulder.

Otherwise, this book is pretty good! Police procedurals in exotic locales are my "cozy" mysteries. ?

#bookandbreakfast at our messy kitchen table. Toast with maple jelly and "Make Mine a Builders'" tea, which is a very strong British black tea. ?

bookishkai Ooh, I've never heard of that tea, what brand is it? I love my tea strong, and drank Scottish Breakfast because it was stronger than both English and Irish breakfast, but now I can't get my favorite brand, so I'm back to store brand Tetley, which isn't bad but isn't the best either. 8y
rabbitprincess @bookishkris This is the tea: http://www.makemineabuilders.com I get it from a British import shop that my parents frequent. 8y
