The Break
The Break | Pietro Grossi
8 posts | 3 read | 7 to read
Dino is a placid, unambitious man. Living in a small provincial town, he and his wife spend their time planning journeys to faraway places - journeys they never take. Dino's only passion is billiards, and he spends his evenings in the local billiards hall honing his technique. One day, however, Dino's quiet life is interrupted - his wife falls pregnant. This the first in a series of events that shake him from his slumber and force Dino to test himself for the first time. As in his widely praised Fists, Pietro Grossi's stripped-down prose brings out the epic human drama in a tale of everyday life. From the Trade Paperback edition.

Oh this was wonderful prose and a simple yet detailed story.
It was nothing like I expected, and I need to mull it over somewhat. Thoroughly absorbing read.

One of the recommendations from my book spa.
Short novel, translated from the Italian.
It chronicles a couple who discovered her pregnancy and how he reacts.

I'm finding it extremely difficult to review this book. I finished it over an hour ago and I have needed to roll it around in my mind.

This is a book about a simple man. He lays stones to make roads. He loves playing billiards. He wants everything to be just right.

But sometimes things break. The cue moves forward and the balls roll this way and that.

The prose at times is also so simple and subtle that you might miss it if you blink.

Libby1 Thanks, @Ms_T ! I wasn't sure how to review this book because I didn't think I liked it at first. My admiration grew as I thought about it in its totality and re-read some of the sections. 7y
