Crossing Purgatory: A Novel | Gary Schanbacher
5 posts | 2 read | 2 to read
In the wake of family tragedy, Indiana farmer Thompson Grey takes to the Santa Fe Trail in a beautifully scripted, spare and powerful story of relationships, human frailties, and ultimately, redemption In spring of 1858 Thompson Grey, a young farmer, travels to his fathers estate seeking funds to expand his holdings. Far overstaying his visit, he returns home to find that his absence has contributed to a devastating family tragedy. Haunted by remorse, Thompson abandons his farm and begins a westward exile in the attempt to outpace his grief. Unwittingly, he finds himself at journeys end in the one place where his strongest temptations are able to over take him and once again put him to the test. Set against the backdrop of the frontier during the years just preceding the Civil War, Crossing Purgatory tells a story of unprincipled ambition, guilt, and the price one man is willing to pay for atonement.

Regarding the prairie, I agree. 💚

This is a solid & satisfying western, just what you'd want out of one. Nothing unpredictable, though the author does not shy away from the brutal realities of mid-19th C.

Cathythoughts Deserts, deserted beaches, places of solitude give me comfort 👍 7y

"Men destitute of character roam this trail."

The American west is my soul mate region. ?

ErickaS_Flyleafunfurled Oh! So happy you‘re reading this!! I loved it so much - it‘s like I want to hand out copies on the street corner. 7y

PICK! Slow burn - the harsh landscape of 1850s Colorado is a character itself. Reads like a melancholy Steinbeck (or a more coherent Faulkner). If you like introspective novels with strong character development, definitely pick this up.

ErickaS_Flyleafunfurled @RestlessFickleBookSlut Yeah, but he's only 3 months old and already has long ear hair like an old man, so Im not too mad at him since he's cute 🤷‍♀️ At least I finished my scotch. 7y
Sace @ErickaS_Flyleafunfurled only 3 months? Yeah, way too young to know better. Plus cute to boot. I wouldn't be too mad either. 😊 7y

Just started this one and liking it a lot. Novel of the American West set in the 1850s. A man travels west on foot to escape a family tragedy. So far very sad and introspective. Anyone else read it?

Tamra This seems right up my alley, thanks for the suggestion! 7y
ErickaS_Flyleafunfurled @tamra Happy to recommend! I like it so far. Let me know what you think when you get to it. 7y
