I found it odd that the main female protagonist, Tej, fades into the background almost completely in the last half of the book. She becomes such a passive character, as does the male protagonist, Ivan, to some extent.

On the one hand, it was fun to revisit the world that Bujold built in the Miles universe and check-in on some of the characters. On the other hand, this was only an “okay“ story.

A little late to the party, but Moppet and I are ready to #readathon! (Asking me to get up at 7am on a Saturday, even for a day of reading is too much.) Anyways, here‘s my stack (plus the tagged book ready to go on my iPad), kettle‘s on, dogs are fed, let‘s get to reading!

Largly hilarious, especally in the reactions of the secondary characters. I've been avoiding Bujold's scifi -- the Miles character doesn't thrill me -- but I may have to revisit that.

Wow, is that Baen cover art bad, though.

Bujold writes delightfully twisty, gloriously rollicking plots, but her greatest strength is character. It was such fun to see the universe through Ivan's eyes, and I was thrilled for him to finally have a romance!

It's hard being Ivan Vorpatril, but I know something harder: putting down a Lois McMaster Bujold book!

I enjoyed every minute of this book! And kept waking my husband by laughing out loud when I was reading long into the night. It's one of the longer Vorkosigan books, but it didn't feel like it at all. Romance, conspiracies, explosions... Byerly fans should be happy; Ivan is all grown up; and the stage is set for interesting developments in future galactic affairs. The only downside is that any Vorkosigan book with no Cordelia is missing something.
