Imagine...meeting someone with the same name, the same history, the same family, the same identity as you. Now, imagine meeting another person making the same exact claim. What would that do to you? From the Giller Prizewinning novelist of 419 comes the startling, funny, and heartbreaking story of a psychological experiment gone wrong. Ever since his girlfriend ended their relationship, Thomas Rosanoffs life has been on a downward spiral. A gifted med student, he has spent his entire adulthood struggling to escape the legacy of his father, an esteemed psychiatrist who used him as a test subject when he was a boy. Thomas lived his entire young life as the Boy in the Box, watched by researchers behind two-way glass. But now the tables have turned. Thomas is the researcher, and his subjects are three homeless men, all of whom claim to be messiahsbut no three people can be the one and only saviour of the world. Thomas is determined to cure the three men of their delusions, and in so doing save his careerand maybe even his love life. But when Thomass father intervenes in the experiment, events spin out of control, and Thomas must confront the voices he hears in the labyrinth of his own mind. The Shoe on the Roof is an explosively imaginative tour de force, a novel that questions our definitions of sanity and madness, while exploring the magical reality that lies just beyond the world of scientific fact.

Pickpick

This picture has nothing to do with this novel, though I like the clinical look. This book is streamlined and efficient with a main character we can get behind. Great mix of plots that tie together effectively.

Bailedbailed

Nothing against the #audiobook narrator; it‘s the story that I couldn‘t face going back to after I set this aside some time ago. Usually I‘m all in for a novel that tackles the issue of mental health, but I think the problem with this one is that the characters with delusions are just there to further the plot. I might be mistaken, since I didn‘t quite get halfway through, but I‘m bailing anyway.

Should I bail? I‘m 3 hours into this #audiobook and I am uncomfortable with its treatment of mental illness. The characters are intriguing but I don‘t know if I can trust the author and follow where he‘s taking me. I enjoyed Ferguson‘s 419 more than I expected (it was a book club pick) and I‘ve found his essays hit and miss. I‘m feeling unsure of this novel, however. Have any of you finished this?

Augustdana Life is too short! I haven‘t read it because it came in the same time as a few library books, and I prioritized. 6y
Lindy @Augustdana I‘ve set it aside for now while I catch up on podcasts. I know someone IRL who‘s read it, so I will ask her questions before returning to it. 6y

Bailedbailed

Nope. Not today. Today or any day is not where I want to spend any time reading a “guy” book with a condescending guy telling off-colour asides. Not a character I can get behind, and not the kind of writing I‘m going to bother reading. Especially today. This week. This year. 🙄
