Framley Parsonage (Critical)
Framley Parsonage (Critical) | Anthony Ed Trollope

'The fact is, Mark, that you and I cannot conceive the depth of fraud in such a man as that.' The Reverend Mark Robarts makes a mistake. Drawn into a social set at odds with his clerical responsibilities, he guarantees the debts of an unscrupulous Member of Parliament. He stands to lose his reputation, and his family, future, and home are all in peril. His patroness, the proud and demanding Lady Lufton, is offended and the romantic hopes of Mark's sister Lucy, courted by Lady Lufton's son, are in jeopardy. Pride and ambition are set against love and integrity in a novel that has remained one of Trollope's most popular stories. Set against ecclesiastical events in the Barchester diocese and informed by British political instability after the Crimean War, Trollope's fourth Barchester novel was his first major success. This new edition sets the novel in the context of Trollope's developing craft against the backdrop of contemporary clerical and parliamentary affairs, and includes a lively introduction and invaluable notes. A compelling history of uncertain futures, Framley Parsonage is a vivid exploration of emotional and geographical displacement that grew out of Trollope's own experiences as he returned to England from Ireland in 1859. ABOUT THE SERIES: For over 100 years Oxford World's Classics has made available the widest range of literature from around the globe. Each affordable volume reflects Oxford's commitment to scholarship, providing the most accurate text plus a wealth of other valuable features, including expert introductions by leading authorities, helpful notes to clarify the text, up-to-date bibliographies for further study, and much more.

When a man gets into his head an idea that the public voice calls for him, it is astonishing how great becomes his trust in the wisdom of the public.

Spending the morning in the best way possible: tsk-tsking over the irresponsible behavior of a nineteenth-century vicar.

Weekend reading plans! I love Anthony Trollope, and Framley Parsonage does not disappoint. The Milton biography is excellent, providing cultural and literary contexts about 17th century England in addition to details about the life of John Milton. Slow reading, to be sure, but interesting. #fridayreads #amreading

SharonGoforth @Bibliothecarivs Sure! It‘s Hardy, A Biography by Martin Seymour-Smith. I found it at Half Price Books a few years ago. Haven‘t read it yet, so I don‘t know if it is any good or not. 4y
bibliothecarivs @SharonGoforth Thanks! I love TH. 4y
SharonGoforth @Bibliothecarivs You‘re welcome! I love TH, too!💕 4y
bibliothecarivs @SharonGoforth in that case I'll recommend Michael Millgate's TH: A Biography Revisited which I read a couple years ago and loved. If you've read any bios of him I'd love your recommendations. 4y
SharonGoforth @Bibliothecarivs Thanks for the recommendation! I haven‘t read any biographies of him yet. Have you read Claire Tomlinson‘s biography of him? 4y
bibliothecarivs @SharonGoforth I haven't read Tomalin's bio yet though definitely looking forward to it at some point. 4y

Found stacks of Folios at Riverby Books in Fredericksburg, VA today. I tried to restrain myself and still ended up with five. Waugh‘s The Loved One, and 4 Trollopes - tagged book, and The American Senator, Phineas Redux, and Lady Anna.

Aimeesue There were literally four three-foot-high stacks of Folios. A lot of Trollope and the compilation volumes, the Best of Punch one, for example. 6y

Another lovely romance that follows similar lines to Doctor Thorne and also revisits some beloved characters from earlier in the Chronicles and marries them off beautifully too. I get a bit lost in all the politics and I'm not entirely sure what the Duke of Omnium has done to earn so much opprobrium, but it all rattles along with good things happening to mostly good people and mostly bad people ending up with less, so who could possibly complain?
