The Gift of Pets
The Gift of Pets: Stories Only a Vet Could Tell | Bruce R. Coston, D.V.M.
4 posts | 1 read | 3 to read
Bruce R. Coston's first book, Ask the Animals, earned him high praise for being another James Herriot. Now, in his delightful second memoir, Coston shares more rich stories about his animal patients and the clients who make veterinary practice so fulfilling. In this humorous, poignant, and enthralling collection, Coston explores what it is about the interaction with our pets that provides such profound companionship, and how a love for animals helps us to be more fully human. This ability to enrich and fulfill us is the Gift of pets. Coston's characters, both the people and the animals, will engage you from the first page. You'll meet Mr. Johnston, the linguist, and his Mountain of Love; Rachel, the office prankster; Coston's "girlfriend," Megan; and Mischief, the only patient Coston has ever had that helped to pay for her own surgery. You'll learn what a "sugar glider" is and how to give one mouth-to-mouth resuscitation. You'll marvel at Lisa, Coston's first veterinary technician, and the courage that the Gift of pets gave her to reinvent herself and rekindle the dreams she thought she had squandered. The Gift of Pets celebrates what it's like to be truly blessed with a deep love and concern for the pets with which we surround ourselves. Coston invites all animal lovers to rejoice in that Gift with him in this inspiring book of true stories.

Mehso-so

A good portion was about his receptionist who became a vet tech who died of lung cancer who they created a scholarship in memory of.
Many sad tales. Fail to see humour in a lot of it.

I posted this one a little over a month ago, but it fits today's prompt. Plus it never hurts to repost cute cats! Meet Tennille, top right and captain, lower right. I don't know the other cat, but knowing me I would love that one, too. #familypet #scenesfromabook #catsoflitsy 🐱 ❤️

AlaMich @Purrfectpages Oh dear. You have just made me feel a hundred years old!! 😉 The Captain and Tennille was a musical/comedy-ish show in the 70s. They were a married couple and he played the keyboard (and never talked) and she sang. 7y
AlaMich @Purrfectpages Wait, I‘m confused...are those your cats? 7y
Purrfectpages @AlaMich oh I know who they are, I just forgot they had a show lol They were a little before my time, but we needed a dynamic duo for their names. Now everyone understandably thinks we are huge fans! 😂 7y
Purrfectpages @AlaMich I totally get why you're confused by my comment. But yes, they are my cats! 7y
AlaMich @Purrfectpages Do you have a little sea captain hat for Captain to wear for Halloween? 😊 7y
Purrfectpages @AlaMich no hat, but he is the strong, silent type and definitely lives up to the name in other ways! 😂 7y
