Back to Blood
Back to Blood: A Novel | Tom Wolfe
7 posts | 10 read | 4 to read
A big, panoramic story of the new America, as told by our master chronicler of the way we live now. As a police launch speeds across Miami's Biscayne Bay-with officer Nestor Camacho on board-Tom Wolfe is off and running. Into the feverous landscape of the city, he introduces the Cuban mayor, the black police chief, a wanna-go-muckraking young journalist and his Yale-marinated editor; an Anglo sex-addiction psychiatrist and his Latina nurse by day, loin lock by night-until lately, the love of Nestor's life; a refined, and oh-so-light-skinned young woman from Haiti and her Creole-spouting, black-gang-banger-stylin' little brother; a billionaire porn addict, crack dealers in the 'hoods, "de-skilled" conceptual artists at the Miami Art Basel Fair, "spectators" at the annual Biscayne Bay regatta looking only for that night's orgy, yenta-heavy ex-New Yorkers at an "Active Adult" condo, and a nest of shady Russians. Based on the same sort of detailed, on-scene, high-energy reporting that powered Tom Wolfe's previous bestselling novels, BACK TO BLOOD is another brilliant, spot-on, scrupulous, and often hilarious reckoning with our times.

#WeRemember Day 4: Over the years, I have acquired a fair bit of #TomWolfe titles usually through book sales in Singapore. Here is my book haul that included Tom Wolfe titles: https://wp.me/pDlzr-eZ2

Today my literary - culinary world-tour led me throughout South America. For breakfast I had Mexican Baked Eggs (book: Viva), lunch was a Cubano (book: Back to Blood) and for dinner I made myself a Vegetarian Argentinian Empanada (book: In Resolution).

Tasty day 😋

Pickpick

This was my first book by Tom Wolfe and I found it very fascinating from the beginning until the end. Maybe because I was listening to the audio book - this book is just meant to be read out loud.

I hardly knew anything about Miami and the immigrants that meet there. When asking an American friend about the content of the story she confirmed that it really is the way Wolfe describes it in this book. So I definitely learned a lot here.

One of the last books I didn't like but still finished. The writing really annoyed me, especially in the beginning. Almost every sentence was interrupted by WHACK or other sounds recreated in words. #marchintoreading

Reviewsbylola I felt the same way about the only book of Wolfe's I've ever read, 7y

Saw this while browsing a friends bookshelves the other day and then spotted it at the .99 cents only store. I took that as a sign and snagged it. And the tbr grows... 😆
