A Long Day in Lychford
A Long Day in Lychford | Paul Cornell
6 posts | 11 read | 6 to read
A Long Day in Lychford is the third book in Paul Cornell's increasingly popular Witches of Lychford series. It's a period of turmoil in Britain, with the country's politicians electing to remove the UK from the European Union, despite ever-increasing evidence that the public no longer supports it. And the small town of Lychford is suffering. But what can three rural witches do to guard against the unknown? And why are unwary hikers being led over the magical borders by their smartphones' mapping software? And is the immigration question really important enough to kill for? At the Publisher's request, this title is being sold without Digital Rights Management Software (DRM) applied.

Pickpick

I returned to this short novella series once again. I loved it, once again. I will say that the impetus for the story, or the hook for this third installment, was beginning to get a little cliche. But, the writing is good, the pacing is great. and the plot itself is great. I didn't expect to like a story about witches dealing with the Brexit vote as much as I did. I'll finish this series soon, and then I will be sad.

Pickpick

The long-standing Brexit metaphors come out of the Lychford shadows and claim plot status in this third instalment. The novella nods at difficult questions of xenophobia and microaggressions and successfully delivers a bruising look at (mystical) border control and personal responsibility. Not as successful as the first two books, for me, but a brave effort that sets the stage for the final act.

Autumn, one of Lychford's the witches and few persons of color, is having trouble reconciling the people of her village, whom she known ask her life, with the Brexit vote. Most of the time she let's the micro-aggressions slide, but one night she mixes her anger with her magic and manages to rip apart the borders that protect Lychford from other worlds. It'll take Autumn, Lizzie, and Judith to see if they can put things right again.

I‘m enjoying these quick witchy reads by Paul Cornell, but the first — Witches of Lychford — is definitely my favorite! #witchyreads #bookreview #ebook #review
