Out of the Wreckage
Out of the Wreckage: A New Politics for an Age of Crisis | George Monbiot
7 posts | 4 read | 7 to read
A thrilling new route to a better society A toxic ideology of extreme competition and individualism has come to dominate our world. It misrepresents human nature, destroying hope and common purpose. Only a positive vision can replace it, a new story that re-engages people in politics and lights a path to a better future. George Monbiot shows how new findings in psychology, neuroscience and evolutionary biology cast human nature in a radically different light: as the supreme altruists and cooperators. He shows how we can build on these findings to create a new politics: a politics of belonging. Both democracy and economic life can be radically reorganized from the bottom up, enabling us to take back control and overthrow the forces that have thwarted our ambitions for a better society. Urgent and passionate, Out of the Wreckage provides the hope and clarity required to change the world.

1/50 books from my owned tbr read so that I can clear out my shelves - I really don‘t want to own this many heaps of books anymore so I‘m setting an ambitious goal to read them all!

Loved this book, an optimistic, brave, original look into a possible better future. Full of concrete ideas, cases of well-run equitable projects in other countries. A good book for current British politics.

What a wonderful idea by this South Korean city! Wonderful for the environment (locally and internationally), children‘s safety and education, the community, the good of the community. Can everywhere do this?? You go Suwon 💪🥰

Sunday morning reading. I‘ve totally lost count for #24b4monday unfortunately, so I‘m just aiming for A Lot at this point. Loving George Monbiot and using one of @StillLookingForCarmenSanDiego ‘s awesome bookmarks from the package yesterday

Quotes on the first page:

‘Nations and peoples are largely the stories they feed themselves. If they tell themselves stories that are lies, they will suffer the future consequences of those lies. If they tell themselves stories that face their own truths, they will free their histories for future flowering.‘

Quotes like this remind me why reading matters to me. #24b4monday

suzisteffen @Emilymdxn YES. Love George Monbiot though his writing is also terrifying. And Ben Okri is great as well. Thanks for this; will add to stack. 6y

Next up! George Monbiot is one of my favourite journalists. I‘m intensely worried about British politics (like everyone else) and I get even more worried and frightened when I try to disengage from it. I know a lot of people switch off and don‘t read it but that makes it so much worse for me! Reading about it keeps me a bit calmer. #24b4monday @TheReadingMermaid @Andrew65

BeansPage 😍😍😍 6y
Naj I'm reading Winter by Ali Smith at the moment and it discusses Brexit and the Trident nuclear programme (which I had no clue about prior to this book). It's really interesting and subtly emphasizes the importance of activism and being political. 6y
Emilymdxn @Naj I‘ve been really wanting to read that!! I didn‘t know it discussed Trident tho, that makes me want to read it more 6y
Andrew65 Agree about the state of British Politics, Everyone seems to be our for their personal interest and personal agenda, rather than focusing on what is best for the Country! 6y

My books from the Verso sale arrived! As I find the world harder and harder to live in and we head for a difficult year in Britain (and everywhere else), I find it comforting to have books by people I respect to navigate me through a bit, or at least to feel like I‘m not the only one freaking out.

PippoRanito I think I know how you feel. The harrowing circumstances the world is embroiled in right now are enough to make one insane. Luckily, there are books to keep us intact and sober to face reality with renewed vigour and intellect. 6y
Emilymdxn @PippoRanito couldn‘t have said it better myself. It means a lot to me to have likeminded people and my reading community right now - gives me a lot of faith 6y
Amiable Amen 6y
