Now You're One of Us | Asa Nonami
6 posts | 2 read | 18 to read
The Shito family: eight peopple, four generations, one household, with young newly wed Noriko joining the clan to make nine. The family is comfortaby well-off and it seems as if noriko's happiness is assured... until, that is, she begins to suspect that her new in-laws' charming eccentricities may in fact contain hints of something more sinister. Exploring themes of ambiguity and perversion, Asa Nonami portrays family life as a kind of microcosmic religion, in which one must ultimately make the choice of being a 'believer' or a 'heretic'.

Okay, so this book is...odd. It's a quick read (read it just today, even with homeschool and parenting and a broken dishwasher) and a little cliched in spots with some questionable leaps, but I found it enjoyable.

Also, it's my #doublespin for November, which I got in just under the wire! (I know I can technically read #bookspin selections any time, but it feels like an accomplishment to read them in the month they were drawn.) @TheAromaofBooks

Clare-Dragonfly I totally agree that it feels like an accomplishment to read your #bookspin books in the month they were drawn 😂 I didn‘t do that in November, alas. 4y
TheAromaofBooks Great progress!! And it is definitely fun to get the books read in their “official“ timeframe!! 😂 4y

Taking notes during my son's virtual piano lesson and trying to sneak in one more book for November. If I'm going to get this one done today, I might need to hide in the closet under the stairs.

I feel like I‘m in a little bit of a slump. Maybe it‘s also just because I‘m watching more horror movies this month, but I DNF‘d 3 books in the last couple of weeks. I‘m hoping this one will turn things around for me.

Nute I‘m in a weird place with reading right now as well. It‘s been this way since the pandemic forced the stay-at-home order. More time to read, but less desire to read.🤷🏽‍♀️ I take it as it comes now.🙂 4y
Godpants @Nute I feel that! I‘m fortunately able to listen to a lot of books on my commute, and sometimes while I‘m working which helps get through stuff. 4y
Nute I tried an audiobook in the car, but I must be a daydreamer. I had to keep rewinding it to get it in my head. I think that reading books is turning around for me a little but now. I‘ve finished two books this past week. Here‘s hoping for back-to-normal reading experiences for both of us! 4y

I like for suspense to have some higher purpose ;)

And in today‘s edition of book covers that SERIOUSLY skeeve me out...🤢😷

Sadly, the book sounds pretty good. “This first novel has been described as a cross between Rosemary‘s Baby and Rebecca” according to BookRiot. But there is no way I can look at that cover for any extended period of time. No. Way.

JacqMac I agree. I hate it when they ruin a good book with a bad cover. 5y
