Rumours & Recklessness
Rumours & Recklessness: A Pride and Prejudice Variation | Nicole Clarkston
2 posts | 2 to read
Fitzwilliam Darcy is desperate. Finally confronted with a woman who ignites all his hopes, he agonizes over the cruel trick of fate which placed her in a situation beneath his notice. The morning after the Netherfield ball, he resolves to put as much distance between himself and her as possible. That very morning, however, Elizabeth’s future is jeopardized by her father’s untimely accident. With Mr Bennet unconscious and surrounded by concerned neighbors, Mr Collins presses his suit. Elizabeth’s mother frantically demands her acceptance to secure the familiy’s welfare. With so many witnesses to his proposal and everyone expecting her to make a practical choice, Elizabeth’s reputation hangs in the balance. Without her father to defend her refusal of Mr Collins, there is no one to speak up for her... except the last man in the world she would ever marry.

I've decided to interpret the #tea prompt along the lines of “spill the tea“ 😂

In this version, Darcy and Bingley actually stop by to tell the Bennet family farewell the day after the Netherfield Ball. When they arrive, however, they find that Mr. Bennet has been struck down by a stroke or some such and is in a coma. They are just in time to hear Mr. Collins announce his engagement to Elizabeth (much to Elizabeth's surprise!) as his way of ⬇

TheAromaofBooks (cont'd) reassuring the family that “should the worst happen“ they'll still be taken care of. In the chaos of the scene, Darcy spontaneously announces that it's impossible for Elizabeth to be engaged to Mr. Collins, as she is actually engaged to HIM. While this sounds ridiculous, Clarkston somehow pulls it off in a way that seems (mostly) plausible. Now D&E are in a situation where they still have to overcome their differences, but it's in their ⬇ 2y
TheAromaofBooks (cont'd) best interests to work together and figure things out. I really enjoyed this one, although there was some side drama with Darcy's cousin Anne that felt like padding to make the story longer. But the characters are written in a likable way that makes the whole thing fun.

LeahBergen I‘m in daily awe at how many variations you‘ve read!! 😆 2y
CrowCAH A couple of these variations mentioned, they kill off Me. Bennett! Seems he‘s on the short list lol 2y
CrowCAH @LeahBergen I agree! There‘s one for every day‘s prompt! 2y
TheAromaofBooks @LeahBergen @CrowCAH - The sad part is I've actually read MORE than just the 31 I've chosen to fill these prompts! 😂 They're kind of my go-to comfort reads/what I read when I'm in a reading slump. Something about seeing how so many people have come up with so many variations on a theme just completely intrigues me, even the terrible ones LOL 2y
TheAromaofBooks @CrowCAH - Some of the authors are quite ruthless about killing people off - my favorites are the ones that just knock out huge chunks of family by having them be in a carriage accident! But poor Mr. B seems to be the most frequent victim of I-need-someone-dead-to-forward-the-plot 😂 2y
LeahBergen I hear ya! My go-to comfort reads are vintage school stories … no matter how bad or improbable the plots are in them. And I‘ve read a LOT of them! 🤣🤣 2y
mabell I really like the sound of this one! 2y
