Parasite Eve
Parasite Eve | Hideaki Sena, Tyran Grillo
5 posts | 5 read | 4 to read
It was this novel, along with Koji Suzuki's Ring series that began the J-Horror boom. A page-turner about the rebellion of mitochondria, it became the Japan Horror Novel Award's first winner and the inspiration for a videogame that became a hit. At the centre of the novel is Eve, initially just a microscopic entity who later questions the meaning of life, harking the philosophical musings of Ghosts in the Shell. Once Eve tastes the fruit of free will and love, science proves powerless to her infection. Now in paperback.

Cool premise as parasite ... possession? But also a little science heavy and, most importantly, using a minor in what's basically gore porn. Would've bailed but he left that one until the end.

Mehso-so

A very interesting, very unsettling concept, backed up by a tremendous amount of research, but way too much traditionally misogynistic "battle of the sexes" bullshit embedded in it for me. The allocishets are exhausting.

"Her female friends expressed envy, and, though she smiled it away, inside she was a sack of sighs."
Today in odd metaphors.

This was a completely unique concept and a pretty good suspense novel. Translated from Japanese, it deals with an unexpected evolutionary mutation. But it keeps it all very personal, going between the points of view of a few characters. There are a lot of scientific details, which may deter some, but do add to the understanding.

Just started this horror in translation from Japanese. Loooots of detailed medical stuff so far concerning a kidney transplant but I'm interested to see where this is going.
