A great story for kids about a young boys struggle to escape slavery, find his way north, survive the battle at Gettysburg and finally find a peaceful home with his sister in Vermont.

I Survived the Battle of Gettysburg is a Historical Fiction book about a boy and his sister who run away from their farm because they were scared some soldiers were going to separate them. After a series of events, they ended up in the Battle of Gettysburg. I would do guided reading with the students. A quick video about the Battle of Gettysburg for extra reinforcement. https://youtu.be/HNb4FxBJP48 #UCFwalterslit

I‘ve only just finished this one entry of this series, but I think it is an awesome set up for a historical fiction series for children. Original young characters find themselves caught up in incredibly dire & life-threatening historical events. While short, the book is jam-packed with tons of historical information, along with a list of recommended books for further reading. I‘m eager to read more of the books in this series!

One of the fifth grade teachers told me how she really enjoyed this book, so I decided to give it a read. A lot of our students really love this series, so I should see what the appeal is. #BooksInTheWild #UncannyOctober
