The Soul of Rumi
The Soul of Rumi: A New Collection of Ecstatic Poems | Coleman Barks
5 posts | 7 to read
The Soul of Rumi is renowned poet Coleman Barks' first major assemblage of newly translated Rumi poems since his bestselling The Essential Rumi. Coleman Barks presents entirely new translations of Rumi's poems, published for the first time in The Soul of Rumi. The poems range over the breadth of Rumi's themes: silence, emptiness, play, God, peace, grief, sexuality, music, to name just a few. But the focus is on the ecstatic experience of human and divine love and their inseparability, conveyed with Rumi's signature passion, daring, and insights into the human heart and the heart's longings.

"Suddenly the drunken sweetheart appeared out of my door.

She drank a cup of ruby wine and sat by my side.

Seeing and holding the lockets of her hair

My face became all eyes, and my eyes all hands."

Since poetry is basically impossible to translate, I think this counts as collaboration. Coleman Barks's sensitive translations of Rumi's Sanskrit have made Rumi's poetry accessible and even powerful for people of our time. #augustphotochallenge #favauthorcollaborations

Megabooks I met and went to a reading by Coleman Barks in college. So cool! 8y
Louise @Ebooksandcooks Was he doing the music along with the poetry at that time? Either way, that must have been quite an experience! 8y
Megabooks No, no music, but the reading was amazing! 8y

shawnmooney Seeing your post brings back a vivid memory – I hope you don't mind my sharing – I read Rumi's poems from another collection, not this exact one, to my close friend Father Mike, a gay Roman Catholic priest as he lay dying of AIDS in hospital in Toronto in the mid 1990s. He was unable to communicate with me by this stage, but I could tell he loved these poems… 8y
Louise @shawnmooney What a beautiful story! Thank you for sharing. I agree with you that there is great spiritual comfort in Rumi's poetry that transcends religion or circumstance. You gave Father Mike a great gift. ❤️ 8y
Hugoreads Rumi's poetry is certainly a balm for this world. 8y
