Exit stage left for murder When Mordecai Tremaine emerges from the train station in the village of Dalmering, murder is the last thing on his mind. But he has never been able to resist anything in the way of a mystery-and a mystery is precisely what awaits him in the small hamlet. Rehearsals for the local amateur dramatic production are in full swing, but as Mordecai discovers too soon, the real tragedy is unfolding offstage. The star of the show has been found dead, and the spotlight falls on Mordecai, whose reputation in the field of crime-solving precedes him. With a murderer waiting in the wings, it's up to Mordecai to derail the killer's performance...before it's curtains for another victim.

Mehso-so

Mordecai Tremaine is described as childlike and a hopeless romantic, yet he incongruously makes a study of murder and crime his hobby. A retired tobacconist, he is at leisure to travel, and his travels invariably involve him in a local mystery. This time, a brutal murder occurs in a seemingly tranquil and picturesque village…

Thank you for giving it to me, @Gissy ! I love the cover!

(And this is my new Emma Bridgewater mug 😍)

mabell Between a pan and a so-so, I frequently found the story overshadowed by the author‘s histrionic descriptions - e.g. “The surface of the relationship between the men and women talking so casually was perilously brittle; occasionally it would break for an instant and reveal the ugly storm of fear and mistrust that was sultrily brewing beneath it.”

Pickpick

Mordeca Tremaine,a self effacing old man,has the uncanny ability to go unnoticed. He quietly & accurately observes those around him. With his prince-nez pinching his nose,& his garrulous, rambling talking, people take him for a bumbling old man of no consequence. But Mordeca has them all fooled. His observational skills, keen intuition,& fascination with mysteries, makes him a challenging foe, especially when he pairs up with CI Boyce to solve murders.🔽

kspenmoll 🔼When he visits friends in the small village of Dalmering, murder is far from his mind. But when a murder involving a local amateur theatre group occurs, he is drawn into solving the case. (edited) 3y

Mordecai Tremaine investigates the murder of an amateur actor. I've never heard of this series, but I love the cover art! And Mordecai Tremaine is a pretty excellent name. #mynovbookmail
