Oscar and the Lady in Pink
Oscar and the Lady in Pink | Eric-Emmanuel Schmitt
6 posts | 12 read | 1 to read
'My name is Oscar and I'm ten years old. . . They call me Egghead and I look about seven. I live in hospital because of my cancer and I've never written to you because I don't even know if you exist,' writes Oscar in a letter to God. Oscar is ill and no one, especially not his parents, will tell him what he already knows: that he is dying. Granny Rose, the oldest of the 'ladies in pink' who visit Oscar and his fellow patients, makes friends with him. She suggests that he play a game: that each of the following twelve days is a decade of his imagined future. One day equals ten years, and every night Oscar writes a letter to God telling him about his life. The ten letters that follow are sensitive, funny, heartbreaking and, ultimately, uplifting. Oscar and the Lady in Pink is a small fable with a big heart; it will change the way you feel about death and life.

Pickpick

This is pretty sad. The English title is Oscar and the Woman in Pink. Basically Oscar is dying and Mamie Rose comes up with ways to get him through it. It's epistolary with Oscar writing letters to God.

IuliaC @vlwelser Hard to say, I've read so many by him and enjoyed them all! I think the ones I liked most are "L'évangile selon Pilat", "Lorsque j'étais une oeuvre d'art" and the short story collection "The most beautiful book in the world" which includes "La rêveuse d'Ostende". I actually found out about him through the theater play "L'hôtel des deux mondes" some years ago 2y
vlwelser @IuliaC Thank you! It seems like every time I read a book I end up adding 3 more to my wish list. Thankfully my library seems to have some of them. 2y
IuliaC @vlwelser It happens all the time 😊👍 It's difficult when the libraries don't have them 😁 2y

Please. Ask me if I needed more books to read.

Already like 20 pages into the tagged one. Despite the fact that I have a different book that I brought from home sitting on my desk.

kspenmoll Always need more books to read! 2y

I first read that book with my grade 5 and 6 students. It was just SO great to see them gravitate with me around all the emotions that comes with the book. They were asking me non stop to continu reading it for them. I loved it as much as they did.

#betweennovemberspages for today is ‚short & sweet‘. This was very short and very sweet. Eric-Emmanuel Schmitt‘s ‚Oscar and the Lady in Pink‘ is a bittersweet little book that entertained me on a very long train ride to Munich. ?
