I was interested in this book as a person of Jewish descent who has little knowledge of Jewish religious or cultural practices, but would like to know more! This book is accessible, engaging, clearly-organized, and informative. What I saw as Pogrebin‘s attempt to walk the line politically regarding the Israeli-Palestinian conflict was uncomfortable sometimes, especially when it felt relevant to the message of a holiday. I planned my reading of this book around the Jewish holidays. I enjoyed the author‘s writing of her experience fully immersing herself in observing all the holidays for one year. Although I know about the major holidays, it was interesting to learn about the not so major holidays and to read about her observance of them. I even learned a little bit about them. It was a good book for me to read as I was observing my holidays.

Preparing for Shabbat and just finished this book. I read this over the course of the year starting with rose hashanah. The author, already a regular shul goer, sets out to fully observe each holiday of the Jewish year. I loved learning more about each holiday and seeing different rabbis thoughts and explanations of the traditional and not so traditional practices.
