What She Lost | Melissa W. Hunter
post image

This is a fictonalized account of the true story of the author's grandmother and her time spent in the concentration camps and her time after. I started just yesterday and am 82% finished.

@cinfhen
#neverforget #neveragain

Cinfhen Thanks for tagging me #stacked l just signed up for a Jewish Roots trip to Poland. My grandfather was born there and though he and all 9 of his siblings and parents got out between 1934-1937 all of his first cousins, aunts, uncles and grandparents died in the Holocaust. I‘ll be visiting Poland and all the sites in February. I‘m going with my daughter. I‘m mentally preparing myself 💔 1d
Insightsintobooks @Cinfhen oh, I'm so sorry 💔💔. I'm sure the trip will be hard. Glad your father and his siblings and your grandparents were able to get out. 1d
Cinfhen It‘s my grandfather who fled Poland , so I got to know my great grandparents and all of my great aunts and uncles. In this sense, I‘m lucky. It‘s going to be a very emotionally draining trip, but it‘s something I‘ve always talked about doing. We will be joined on the trip with a survivor who will be our guide along with another guide from Yad Vashem, Israel‘s Holocaust Museum😢😭 1d

Insightsintobooks @Cinfhen oh wow. I don't know for sure, but I've always had a feeling I had Jewish ancestry. No one on my mother's side ever talked about their past and now there's no one to ask. So I was doing family history research and found a lot of Jewish last names... this eventually led me to Yad Vashem and I looked up a few names that I know and there were so many... like I said I'm not positive still looking into it. You are very lucky. 1d
Insightsintobooks @Cinfhen sorry you mentioned Yad Vashem and that kinda brought me back to all those names. I'm sure the trip will be draining, but it will be informative to have a guide who is a survivor and one from Yad Vashem as well. 1d
Cinfhen It‘s vey chilling to make that discovery @Insightsintobooks good luck with your search 💚 1d
Insightsintobooks @Cinfhen I agree, thank you. ❤ All I know for sure is when I converted It felt like I was coming home. (I know many converts feel this way, but i don't know its hard to explain). 1d
Cinfhen Converting to Judaism is not easy at all. I admire your dedication and strength 💜 1d
Insightsintobooks @Cinfhen Thank you. I couldn't imagine my life without Judaism. It's like air. 1d

I'll admit it... I went straight to the desserts. I mean there are apple pie egg rolls. I loved this cookbook. This is actually my first kosher cookbook. (I usually look up recipies online or make my own) so I was excited. I love how each recipie says parve milk or dairy! I also loved that there were menus for each holiday in back. I just simply loved it and the pictures were gorgeous. I wish there were more pictures and recipies both

So, I got mail today!! (Actually the other day but couldn't pick it up until today). A new Siddur (prayer book). 😃 I love siddur's of all kinds. I love this one, 😍😍 but the writing is a little small.... I think I might need a magnifying glass.... ☹... it's actully like this in most of the siddur's I've seen... maybe I should look and see if I could find a larger print one.... I still love this one this though. 😍😍😍😍

I'm rereading the tagged book. It's heartbreaking. I have no words. There are many alive today who believe it is "Jewish propaganda" something I've been told to my face and that I'm a "lying murderous jew". We can #neverforget and we must teach our children. This can never happen again. (I know I've been posting about the holocaust lately sorry if it upsets anyone my experiance hit me hard and It impacted me greatly)

#NEVERFORGET #NEVERAGAIN

AprilMae I had a crazy intense argument in high school with a kid 3 or so grades older than me about that same thing. His parents or something basically told him that it never happened. I got so, so, so angry with him. So the people who lost family were lying? So the people who have those tattoos and the terrible scars were lying? So Germany and Poland have these giant random buildings and sites set aside BECAUSE NOTHING HAPPENED????? 2w
Chrissyreadit It should hit hard- and should be taught and discussed - sometimes I think we did not learn a damn thing. 2w
Insightsintobooks @AprilMae wow, I'm suprised he didn't learn at least something about it in High school. I heard more schools are making holocaust education mandatory which I believe is a good thing. 2w
See All 26 Comments
AprilMae I couldn't believe that this guy, who had to take the same history class as I would the following year, which was a huge in depth look at the Holocaust and the war, didn't believe it. After all the stories, the videos and the haunting photographs, he just didn't get it. 2w
AprilMae The following year I had the opportunity to visit Dachau on a trip to Germany. It was an (for lack of a better term) amazing yet terrifying sight to see. In the 2-3 hours we were there is would end up crying numerous times. I honestly think that if these non-believers who think it never happened had to go to one of the camps, saw the crematorium, saw the massive pile of shoes from the victims, still there! Maybe they would understand. 2w
AprilMae @Insightsintobooks my school did a great job on teaching it. And maybe I'm just a history nerd who soaks up all the history, but I think that class was one of the more well liked classes (not because of subject matter but because of how it was taught). I fully support a well taught Holocaust class be mandatory for all students. 2w
AprilMae (Also, sorry to take over your comments @Insightsintobooks !!! But I too, am passionate about people knowing about this) 2w
Insightsintobooks @AprilMae I agree, and one would only hope. 2w
Insightsintobooks @AprilMae it's okay. I understand. 2w
Insightsintobooks @Chrissyreadit I agree that sometimes it feels that way. 2w
nichollinlove In high school I hosted two girls from Germany and the very first night here they apologized with tears in their eyes for the Holocaust. At 15, I was beside myself, something that seemed like a lifetime ago to me was something these girls still felt the burden and shame of. That experience helped open my eyes and my heart more than anything I learned in a textbook at school. 2w
nichollinlove Also, I just started reading Tattoist of Auschwitz and 50 pages in, my heart is just breaking. It's hard to understand how this could happen. How men/soldiers could be so blindly cruel. I can't imagine how dense you would have to be to choose to believe this didn't happen. It's disrespectful and shameful as a thought alone. 2w
Insightsintobooks @nichollinlove I agree it is a shameful thought. 2w
Lifeisasnap I met a 20ish gal the other day that denied it ever happened & that all the historians were making it up because we are a war loving nation. I almost slapped her face! My grand uncle was liberated from Auschwitz-Birkenau & yet never returned to his family. My poor Oma didn‘t know her brother had been liberated when she died at the age of 92. My uncle found out after they went to the camp & saw his name in the book. It was a blessing & traumatic. 2w
Lifeisasnap Have you read Cilka‘s Journey yet? I found it more hopeful and yet even more heartbreaking. If you haven‘t read it I recommend it. 2w
Insightsintobooks @Lifeisasnap I'm so sorry. And yes I have read Cilka's Journey. 2w
Ddzmini 😨😰😰😰 2w
AnneCecilie That quote really is food for thought. I‘ve visited Auschwitz a while back and then the immensity of it all hit me. Rows and rows and rows of chimneys, as far as the eye can see. When I left, I was in tears 2w
Gaylagal2 Have you seen Prosecuting Evil on Netflix? The man is a hero for what he did and his perseverance to prosecute natzis👊🤙 2w
Insightsintobooks @Gaylagal2 no, I haven't. I actually don't have Netflix. 2w
Insightsintobooks @AnneCecilie I agree about the quote. I can only imagine what visting Auschwitz was like, I've never been, but maybe one day. 2w
CarolynM I've met someone who was with the first British troops into Belsen-Belsen. I suppose he was lying too😡 2w
Cinfhen Such a powerful quote! I recently read this book and I was astonished by new “material” I wasn‘t aware of. Really heartbreaking. 2w
Insightsintobooks @Cinfhen it is. Have you read Cilkas Journey yet? 2w
Cinfhen Not yet, it‘s high up on my #WishList 2w

This is about a Romani family taken to Auschwitz (based on actual events) because not everyone taken to the camps was Jewish.

I actually haven't read many books about the non jews that were taken to the camps, I would like to learn more about their experiances. Does anyone have any suggestions? Thank you.

Kaylamburson Sarah's Key about the French, I believe, and not specifically about the camps but Salt to the Sea (YA) gives you a completely different look at WWII around the sinking of the Wilhelm Gustloff (bigger disaster than the Titanic & Lusitania combined), but rarely talked about because it was filled with refugees. 2w
Texreader I think it was about Jews but this title reminded me of an excellent audiobook I listened to years ago, about the Holocaust, 2w
Texreader @Kaylamburson I started the movie but had to stop. Way way way too heartbreaking for my emotional heart. (edited) 2w

Hi. I've encountered antisemitism on a higher scale than I have before. (I was called pretty much every antisemetic thing you can think of) This has led me to want to spread a greater awarness of the holocaust, what happened, and Judaism itself and its beliefs as I know many only know what they heard in High school. I know it is difficult to read about. it is something we should never never forget. Posting books about this soon if interested. 👇

Insightsintobooks I will be posting lists of books on the Holocaust shortly and ones that are good to learn more about Judaism. Also if you want you could email me at insightsintobooks@gmail.com and I could send you a list. It might take me a bit to compile a list as I just thought of this and I want it to be as helpful as possible. 2w
Branwen I'm very interested in reading these books! I'm very curious to see what ends up on your list. This is obviously such an important topic and one that I think everyone could and should learn more about. Thank you for doing this. You rock, friend! 💕 2w

Insightsintobooks @Eggs Thank you. 2w
Eggs I would be happy to suggest. I‘ve read 100s of NF about the Holocaust, specifically those who hid/saved Jews in Germany, Austria, France, Italy. Also HF of hunting down Nazi war criminals after WW2. Let me work on that 2w
Insightsintobooks @Eggs that would be wonderful thank you! 2w
Butterfinger I did not know about the siege of Masada or Spinoza till I read this book. I feel both are important, but lost in history. I hate that you had to suffer such hatred. I look forward to more posts. 2w
Cinfhen You know Judaism is dear to my heart in almost EVERY form. I can‘t imagine a more worthy cause than highlighting the horrors of The Holocaust. I applaud your effort and I‘m so sorry that you‘ve experienced anti-semitism directly. It‘s definitely more prevalent than ever before. 2w
Cinfhen @Butterfinger if you want to read an EXCELLENT HF novel about Masada I suggest 2w
Butterfinger Oh thanks @Cinfhen - I will stack it. 2w
Insightsintobooks @Cinfhen I do know that. And if you have any suggestions I'd love to hear them. I do agree it is more prevalent 2w

I'm currently reading this book. After having someone call me "a murderous lying jew" among a lot of other horrific things and telling me the Holocaust was "jewish propaganda" this book seems appropriate. If you are wondering yes I was very shaken up by the experiance and still am. All I did was try to tell them why we call the Tanakh the Tanakh and explain why shabbat is from Friday evening to Saturday evening. ?(see comments)

Insightsintobooks I'm not that far into it, but the part on the Kotel (western wall) brought tears to my eyes.... well actually just the mention of the Kotel at all tends to do that. 2w

TheBookAddict 😢 oh no, I‘m sorry you had to experience that. I honestly don‘t understand how people can believe such lies. Just know that not everyone who isn‘t Jewish is that ignorant, insensitive, and disrespectful. We are here for you. I will not pretend to know more than what the public school system taught me, which wasn‘t much, about the holocaust but one thing is for sure; it did happen. Sending you hugs. 💕💕💕 2w
TheBookAddict I think I now need to read more about those events and the Jewish community. I need to be more knowledgeable about it. I usually don‘t read books about the holocaust because of how terrible and sad it is, but I need to be better about just turning a blind eye to things like that. Thank you for sharing and making me aware of a change I need to make in myself. 2w

arubabookwoman I'm so sorry that happened to you. I have a difficult time comprehending why people can be so hateful. 2w
Insightsintobooks @rwmg I don't know, but I think also because of the internet it makes it easier for people to believe whst they want without really looking into it when it wouod be justas easy as a click or two to prove their horrid beliefs wrong. I think it can go both ways. 2w
