Do not lick this book | Idan Ben-Barak, Julian Frost
7 posts | 11 read | 3 to read
Min is a microbe. She is small. Very small. In fact so small that you'd need to look through a microscope to see her. Or you can simply open this book and take Min on an adventure to amazing places she's never seen before - like the icy glaciers of your tooth or the twisted, tangled jungle that is your shirt. The perfect book for anyone who wants to take a closer look at the world.

After reading this, we tried using cheap hand-held scopes. I'm sure they were disappointed, but experienced enough practice that their next opportunity will be even better. Giving them background building opportunities!

Ben-Barak, who holds multiple degrees in medical science and microbiology, teamed up with illustrator Julian Frost to bring life to a subject that may be hard for young children to understand. This NF, award-winning (Eve Pownall Information Book Award & CBCA Book of the Year) book encourages students to go on an interactive adventure with Min the microbe, discovering new friends and learning through real-l microscopic images along the way.

TabathaA To increase understanding, it would be best presented as a RA, using UDL 3.3 (guide information processing and visualization) & EL 17 (provide contextual support through audio visuals, models, demonstrations, realia, body language and facial expressions). 3y

This picture book would best be read using the ST method. “Do not lick this book” can tie into a science lesson about germs while also promoting reading skills & comprehension of events through ST. Within this book we go on an adventure with a microbe named “Min”. We travel with her to numerous destinations. While traveling we get to view these destinations really close up & meet some of her microbe friends along the way!

Vanvlieta This SF book teaches children about germs and how they spread from object to object. It also teaches kids why its important to stay clean. https://www.mensaforkids.org/teach/lesson-plans/the-art-of-storytelling/ Students would comprehend this ST best while using the UDL principles 1.3 (offer alternatives for visual information) & 3.3 (Guide information processing, visualization, and manipulation). 3y
Vanvlieta We also use EL strategies 4 (use visual aids) & 9 (Write key words that are to be used in the lesson. Supply definitions) 🦠🔍 #UCFLAE3414SP21 (edited) 3y
MFlowers It seems this book would be very interactive. What a great opportunity to teach some new vocabulary! 3y
DrSpalding Stop! Your animals are too cute. What a great idea to storytelling this title. This would not necessarily be science fiction. Go back and look at the characteristics of that genre. Books that teach science content most often times are nonfiction. Science fiction tends to encompass time travel, space, technological advancements like cloning… 3y

Panpan

Though I appreciate the extremely magnified pictures of everyday objects, and the idea they get across about how easy it is to pick things up along the way, the interactive experience where they encourage kids to touch the book, put fingers in the mouth and in a belly button- is just kind of nasty. Sorry but pass.
