Betsy Who Cried Wolf | Gail Carson Levine

The spunky, strong-willed, eight-year-old Betsy plans to be the best shepherd in history. As you follow Betsy through this TL book on her adventure, the story begins to seem very familiar...until, Betsy learns that Zimmo (the wolf) wasn‘t after the sheep at all. Really, he just wanted some pie! Come to find out, he was even a great shepherd. By the end, Betsy and Zimmo become friends and herd together.

TabathaA This award-winning book (IRA/CBC Children's Choice) would be presented as a RT. Utilize UDL1.3 (offer alternatives for visual information) and EL 17 (provide contextual support through audio visuals, models, demonstrations, realia, body language, and facial expressions). EL 9 (teach note-taking strategies – t-lists, timelines, etc.) would also be a great tool for comparing the two stories. (edited) 3y

KeanaE I love the resource you included, very informational. 3y
ztorres I can't wait to read this book, it seems like a fun one. Especially because its about a eight year old and students love reading books that they can relate too. I also enjoyed the resources you provided. It is excellent to use with the students during learning centers. 3y
PatriciaS Great review 👍 thanks for the lesson plan helps educators as we prepare for our educational endeavors 3y
Betrinag I‘m really a sucker for twists on classics! Students are immediately engaged because they are familiar with the story, and they remain hooked when they realize it‘s a different story from what they know! I‘ll always agree that these kinds of books are great adds to the classroom library. 3y
Sdemps I love reading TL and this seems like a great one to add to my growing classroom library. RT as a teaching strategy lined up perfectly with your chosen UDL and EL. 3y
DrSpalding Excellent job utilizing the author‘s website and going above and beyond by adding two different lesson plans. Variants of traditional literature like this are wonderful books to compare, text to text for similarities and differences. 3y

In My Heart | Jo Witek

Originally published in French, the translated version of this RF book touches on the range of emotions that we have in our hearts. The colorful die-cut hearts that are seen on each page make it appealing and excites children to see what is coming on the next page. Though this award winner (New Zealand Book Award for Children and Young Adults, New York Times Bestseller) is meant for young readers, it would benefit all ages.

TabathaA Best presented as RA or IR, utilizing UDL 9.3 (develop self-assessment and reflection) and EL 20 (list the most important words and phrases you use or plan to use in a presentation on a transparency or on the chalkboard). Understanding Feelings Lesson: https://sites.google.com/a/wscloud.org/monda-school-counseling/website-builder/g.... 3y
ToddSalerno Although in this area French is probably not terribly common as a native language of students, your post also made me think of another ESOL guideline by having diverse literature in other languages available in your classroom library. (24-incorporate the culture in the language of second language learners in your curriculum.) 3y
KellyR I love to have books like this in the classroom library, I think it is important to have social emotional books in the classroom and I also believe we do discuss the importance have expressing ourselves, as often as we should.
3y
DrSpalding I am adding this book and the sequel to my stack. The social emotional workshop website is excellent and I specifically like the idea of stopping and jotting. This is a form of a quick write that you can easily implement in your classroom. Another excellent post. Your English learner and universal design principles are excellent. I like the idea of the read aloud and even think this could be a simple readers theater. 3y

Self-proclaimed “word nerd“, Brian P. Cleary, has created yet another book with fun illustrations and educational content - this time, focusing on pronouns. This NF, P award-winning (CBC Children's Choice & Book-of-the-Month Children's Club Selection) book helps new writers understand when to use pronouns, the different kinds, and why we use them.

TabathaA A great addition to the class library that can be presented as a RA and integrated into a full ELA lesson. Use UDL 2.1 (clarify vocabulary and symbols) and EL 5 (teach technical vocabulary supporting key concepts). 3y
StephanyNunez This book is a great resourse to use when teaching about pronouns. I like all the resourse you added for this book and I enjoyed watching the read aloud. 3y
KellyR What a fun way to teach grammar, besides lecturing students and writing all the information on the board. I like how you included the author's website and the website showed the various books by that author. 3y
DrSpalding You are going above and beyond on every post to Tabatha. The common sense education resource is another one I need to highly recommend to all of you. Excellent job highlighting valuable resources beyond what is required. This is an excellent series! 3y

This book is just what we need right now! This RF book is one that individuals of all ages should read to be reminded of the importance of kindness. Expressing the impact of paying it forward, it is written in a simple format, perfect for young readers in an IR format.

Ericaj Yes, this book is something we need. I have seen a lot of students struggle with social emotions and being kind to another. As future educators, we need to implement books that teach students how to spread kindness💓 I will be saving these resources for the future. Thank you. 3y
DrSpalding I agree with both you and Erica that this book is some thing we need right now. The random acts of kindness SEL resource is something that we need to bookmark. From being told to be something that she is wasn't, to changing the world, Katie Casey was a symbol of what 1940‘s baseball is all about. This HF award-winning (ALA Amelia Bloomer Selection) book follows the baseball crazed Katie through the time before and during WWII and how she changed minds. Finally, no one would ask “what good baseball was to a girl”, because “they were all too busy talking about how good girls were for baseball.”

TabathaA A great RA story to speak how you can be anything you choose to be, while also integrating history. Present using UDL 7.2 (optimize relevance, value, and authenticity), and EL 4 (link lesson topic to students‘ prior knowledge). Read aloud, animated, with music and study guide: https://dcmp.org/media/8873-players-in-pigtails. Author‘s website: http://www.shanacorey.com/players/. #UCFLAE3414SP21 3y
DrSpalding Not to date ourselves but A League of Their Own was one of my favorite movies about this historical time. While you could not do a movie to book comparison… It‘s nice to know that there are picture books that you can use in social studies instruction. Your animated read aloud is awesome. You found amazing resources! I hope you will use them in your future classroom. 3y

Say a Little Prayer | Dionne Warwick, Tonya Bolden, David Freeman Wooley

Dionne Warwick‘s grandfather used to say that if you can think it, you can do it. Something that stayed with Ms. Warwick throughout her life and career. The five-time Grammy award-winning artist and her team share that, presenting a B story of how she was able to find her talent, build a dream, and follow it. This inspiring tale reminds children that everyone has a special talent and that it is up to us to “find it, perfect it, and enjoy it.”

TabathaA This will be great presented as a RA, promoting UDL 9.1 (promote expectations and beliefs that optimize motivation) and 5.1 (use multiple media for communication), as well as EL 17 (provide contextual support through audio visuals, models, demonstrations, realia, body language and facial expressions) by utilizing the CD that comes along with the book. 3y

After an exchange of gross gifts, Clunk returned the boy‘s sister with a note that says, “I did not like your sister”. From there, a friendship was formed as they bonded over the dislike of his sister.

TabathaA Due to the unfamiliar names of some of the gifts received from Clunk, this award-winning (Golden Duck Award, Wanda Gag Read Aloud Book Award) SF book would best be presented as a RA, using UDL 5.1 (use multiple media for communication) and EL 17 (provide contextual support through audio visuals, models, demonstrations, realia, body language, and facial expressions). DrSpalding This sounds like more of a fantasy but I understand why you may think it‘s science fiction. Picture books go naturally with read aloud‘s and your universal design and English learner strategies work well with that teaching method. 3y
