From turn-of-the-century New Orleans, a city renowned for sin, seduction, and sex, comes a tale of two women inextricably linked by the District of Storyville, where prostitution was legaland flourishing. Kateyoung, beautiful, and abandoned by a man who doesnt love herfinds herself thrown on the mercies of the city. Julia Randsome is a transplanted Yankee, a supporter of womens rights, who against everyones advice marries into one of the citys most prominent families. Though they occupy different universes in New Orleans, somehow all roads bring Kate and Julia to the same placeback to the District. As lush and provocative as New Orleans is itself, Storyville sweeps across lines of caste and blood, money and desireand into the voluptuous secrets of a city as tempting as any on earth. Lois Battle is a born storyteller. The Washington Post Storyville comes to lurid life.Kirkus Reviews

Mehso-so

My #doublespin for June was only so-so. Historical fiction of the red-light district of New Orleans that dropped too many names and used too many clichés. But it whiled away a drizzly Saturday. @TheAromaofBooks

Thank you, @BookwormAHN , for this gorgeous postcard from New Orleans, Louisiana, depicting a "bronze maiden stand[ing] before the tomb of the notorious Storyville madam Josie Arlington in Metairie Cemetery." It was a lovely surprise to find it in my P.O. Box today! #LitsyPostcardExchange

BookwormAHN Your welcome and thank you for the postcard you sent me. 7y

Louise @Heideschrampf A little over a hundred years ago, the Storyville district of New Orleans was the red light district of that city. Needless to say, many "stories" did indeed happen there. And good jazz was played in the music halls. (edited) 7y
Heideschrampf @Louise thanks for the explanation. I dare say this might have been a fitting name, yes 😋 7y
Louise @Heideschrampf Ironically, the nickname "Storyville" came from the name of the politician Sidney Story, who set up the district in an effort to limit and contain prostitution in the city. 7y
