Exodus: A Memoir | Deborah Feldman

"Unorthodox" is fascinating and well-written. "Exodus" is...not. I have so many questions, and none of them were answered here. After Feldman leaves her Hasidic life, how does she survive? She talks about how totally broke she is. At one point, she has to sell her ova in desperation. And yet she is tromping around the US and Europe trying to find herself. How can she possibly afford all that? And where is her son this whole time? Weird timeline.

Listened to the audio version of Feldman‘s original memoir Unorthodox years ago. I always wondered what happened to her after she left her community. I am glad I stumbled across this book.

Pickpick

Read this memoir over the Jewish holiday...interesting follow up to her first book Unorthodox. Deborah Feldman fled from her strict Hasidic upbringing to navigate life as a single mom finding her way in a modern world. Raised by her grandparents, Holocaust survivors, Deborah has a difficult time shedding her Jewish identity that shaped her childhood. She finds herself identifying with her grandmother as they both need to readjust to a new world.

Cinfhen Not always coherent and some stereotype comments lead to a few uncomfortable reading moments but I appreciated her honesty and attempts to secure a better future for herself & her child. 7y

Enjoyed this, loved hearing more about being absorbed, adjusting to a new life. This book shads light on "the pooled inheritance of residual trauma".

Nebklvr Sounds interesting! 8y
