A chilling debut thriller in the vein of Dexter and The Talented Mr Ripley. Martin Reese has a hobby: he digs up murder victims. He buys stolen police files on serial killers, and uses them to find and dig up missing bodies. Calls in the results anonymously, taunting the police for their failure to do their job. Detective Sandra Whittal takes that a little personally. Shes suspicious of the mysterious caller, who she names the Finder. Maybe hes the one leaving the bodies behind. If not, whos to say he wont start soon? As Whittal begins to zero in on the Finder, Martin makes a shocking discovery. It seems someonesomeone lethalis very unhappy about the bodies hes been digging up. Hunted by a cop, hunted by a killer. To escape and keep his family safe, Martin may have to go deeper into the world of murder than he ever imagined. Nathan Ripley is the pseudonym of Naben Ruthnum, a winner of Canadas prestigious Journey Prize for best short story published by an emerging writer. He lives in Toronto. One heck of an addictive thriller. Find You in the Dark by Nathan Ripley is an original, inventive take on what happens when you go looking where you shouldnt. I was pleasantly surprised by how much I enjoyed this audiobook! I hadn‘t heard of the author before which makes sense bc this was his 1st novel. I found it to be well-written. However, there were a couple cliche tropes/plot points that I thought were beneath the quality presented earlier in the book. Looking forward to his second book out this summer!

I read this on a recommendation from a friend. I like thrillers. I‘m into crime. What isn‘t there to like? A lot. I would have bailed on this early if I wasn‘t reading this for a friend. A book that should have been right up my alley, but ended up being such a disappointment.

With a Dexter-adjacent protagonist, this is more thriller than mystery, morally gray, well written, and I can see it getting an adaptation eventually, a series based on the premise. I really enjoyed the sarcasm in the two main POVs, reminded me of Karin Slaughter in that way. #AudioYoga #Audiobooks #Libby

Clare-Dragonfly I bailed on both this and the one Karin Slaughter book I tried. I guess I‘m consistent! I don‘t think I picked up on the sarcasm. 5y
RaimeyGallant @Clare-Dragonfly Makes sense if someone didn't like one, the other wouldn't be to their taste either. Humor is super subjective. My mom would hate this. 5y

Martin Reese has a hobby: he buys stolen police files on serial killers and uses them to find and dig up murder victims. Once he finds them, he calls the police anonymously, taunting them for their failure to do their job. Martin sees his work as a public service, but others disagree... Nathan Ripley will be at #emwf18 to read from his chilling thriller! bit.ly/2MsillX #canlit #thriller

I checked my library list and this one has no renewals left, so I‘m giving it a try next. It‘s okay so far—easy to read, certainly.

While not a masterpiece in terms of writing quality, this was a unique and fun thriller that kept me flipping the pages. 3/5 stars.

A morbidly fun, gruesome-murder-filled thriller (written by a friend of mine!) that takes readers deeper into the gloom of the human psyche with every plot twist.

Read June 2-5
Book 25/50, my 2018 goal halfway point 🎉

The premise of this book was really interesting, but the writing just didn‘t live up to it. Martin Reese is a wealthy Dexter-type. Instead of killing bad guys, he solves cold cases to bring closure to the victims‘ families. He soon gets in over his head and has a suspicious detective on his trail. The story picks up near the end, but the beginning was way too slow.

Kristy_K I have an arc of this too but the poor reviews keep making me put it off. 6y
FairyHighRoad @Kristy_K it‘s not a terrible book. I don‘t regret reading it and I wanted to know how it was going to end. You just need to keep your expectations low. 6y
Kristy_K @FairyHighRoad Good to know. Thanks! 6y

Interesting book! I really enjoyed it and the writing style was really fascinating. My criticism would be that the first half or so of the book was kind of slow paced and then it started going really fast! I think I would would've enjoyed it even more if the pacing was a little better. Still a really enjoyable book, it is a little morbid though, might not be everyone's cup of tea.

RadicalReader @wiesiwies what‘s your ideal thriller that was perfectly paced for you? 6y
wiesiwies @RadicalReader I think something that's more evenly paced, I also enjoy a good ending and sometimes I feel books could spend a little more time on the ending :P but specific books that I felt really happy with were "In a Dark Dark Wood" by Ruth Ware, "He Said She Said" by Erin Kelly and "Perfect People" by Peter James. :) 6y

I loved the premise of this book, but it fell a bit flat for me. Not nearly as intense or creepy as I was hoping for. Nathan Ripley is a pseudonym for Naben Ruthnum, and since this is Naben‘s first thriller, I have high hopes for the future. I met him last night, and he was very nice! #canlit #emwf18

erzascarletbookgasm I remember @batsy finding this ‘meh‘ too 😕 6y

Nathan Ripley is a pseudonym for an author who wrote a short work of nonfiction I loved, so I was rooting for his debut thriller novel. It's a slow burn & goes to some dark places, minus the gore. It needed to be a gripping character study but the main character, Martin Reese, was curiously blank. His foil, the female cop, was equally blank. An interesting premise about privacy, Silicon Valley culture & true crime obsessives that didn't go far.

The premise of this book was really interesting and the writing style was very engaging but I found some parts were just a bit underwhelming. I would say a solid 3.5 ⭐

Hailed as a cross between Dexter and The Talented Mr. Ripley, I thought this book was going to be a mesmerizing study in character development. Nope! It was mediocre at best and I had to push myself to finish partly because I didn't connect with the characters—they were underdeveloped and at times not believable. Ripley's Martin Reese lacks the depth and likability factor of Dexter Morgan, or the creepy brilliance of Highsmith's Tom Ripley.
