Deep
Deep: Freediving, Renegade Science, and What the Ocean Tells Us About Ourselves | James Nestor
New York Times Book Review Editors Choice An Amazon Best Science Book of 2014 Scientific American Recommended Read Fascinating, informative, exhilarating. Wall Street Journal Deep is a voyage from the oceans surface to its darkest trenches, the most mysterious places on Earth. Fascinated by the sport of freedivingin which competitors descend great depths on a single breathJames Nestor embeds with a gang of oceangoing extreme athletes and renegade researchers. He finds whales that communicate with other whales hundreds of miles away, sharks that swim in unerringly straight lines through pitch-black waters, and other strange phenomena. Most illuminating of all, he learns that these abilities are reflected in our own remarkable, and often hidden, potentialincluding echolocation, directional sense, and the profound bodily changes humans undergo when underwater. Along the way, Nestor unlocks his own freediving skills as he communes with the pioneers who are expanding our definition of what is possible in the natural world, and in ourselves. A journey well worth taking. David Epstein, New York Times Book Review Nestor pulls us below the surface into a world far beyond imagining and opens our eyes to these unseen places. This is fascinating reporting on the sport of free diving and the animals that live at the great depths of the ocean. While we might believe that the Earth‘s surface has been fully explored, we really have little knowledge of life at the ocean depths. The author references the women divers of Japan and Korea, so I highly recommend pairing The Island of Sea Women by Lisa See with this book.

In writing about Dad‘s ship salvage career I‘ve been reading a lot about the ocean. I loved parts of this book — a respect for the ocean and those working hard to understand life below the surface. I found some of the reporting troubling. I do love to swim but the idea of free diving (or even scuba diving) hold zero appeal to me. Still, the photos included in the book are awe inspiring.

Ostensibly a book about freediving, Deep explores not only those who dive without SCUBA gear, but also oceanography and marine life. A goodreads reviewer calls this "the perfect blend of pop science, personal narrative, and compelling reporting." #ocean #BoundTogetherJune

Deep is one of the best books I have read so far! James Nestor takes you on an amazing exploration of the ocean and the sport of free diving. It is a must read for anyone looking to get into the sport of free diving, learn more about the ocean or learn about the incredible feats the human body is cable of.

Reagan Oh I loved that book. Top 5 nonfiction of all time for sure. Maybe top 3. I love to see other people enjoy it, it deserves more love! 5y
VioletBramble I'm planning to read this later in the year. I'm glad to hear that it's so good. Great photo, the book looks like it's underwater. 5y
Mrgoudabook @Reagan yes, a short and easily digestible book packed with knowledge definitely deserves more love! 5y
Mrgoudabook @VioletBramble Awesome to hear and I‘m jealous it‘s definitely a book I wish I could forget so that I could experience the joy of reading if for the first time again! And thanks portrait mode for the win lol. (edited) 5y

This book was fascinating. Funny but I had to keep reminding myself to breathe during his descriptions of the dives. Watch the YouTube clip called One Breath Around the World. 🐋

Bklover Just watched that YouTube video! It‘s incredible! Thank you for the recommendation 😍 5y

What is it about the Ocean that draws me in even at the slightest mention? As if to call me back to from where I came. Found myself holding my breath throughout this book. Excellent descriptions from the author that beautifully paint the scenes of men and women pushing the limits of freediving. Here‘s to flipping the “master switch”!

Today‘s Audible daily deal looks interesting. And I really have a hard time resisting an audiobook that‘s less than $3. 🤷🏻‍♀️

JacqMac Same. And my husband says, “what are all these tiny charges on the credit card?” 6y
