Failure Is an Option
Failure Is an Option: An Attempted Memoir | H. Jon Benjamin
20 posts | 29 read | 22 to read
H. Jon Benjamin--the lead voice behind Archer and Bob's Burgers--helps us all feel a little better about our own failures by sharing his own in a hilarious memoir-ish chronicle of failure. Most people would consider H. Jon Benjamin a comedy show business success. But he'd like to remind everyone that as great as success can be, failure is also an option. And maybe the best option. In this book, he tells stories from his own life, from his early days ("wherein I'm unable to deliver a sizzling fajita") to family ("wherein a trip to P.F. Chang's fractures a family") to career ("how I failed to sell a pilot"). As Jon himself says, breaking down one's natural ability to succeed is not an easy task, but also not an insurmountable one. Society as we know it is, sadly, failure averse. But more acceptance of failure, as Jon sees it, will go a long way to making this world a different place . . . a kinder, gentler place, where gardens are overgrown and most people stay home with their pets. A vision of failure, but also a vision of freedom. With stories, examples of artistic and literary failure, and a powerful can't-do attitude, Failure Is an Option is the book the world doesn't need right now but will get regardless.

I would listen to this man read a math textbook. This was absolutely hilarious. Like, I had to pause often because I was literally in tears from laughing so hard. #quaranreads #bobsburgers #archer

Saw this on Libby. I am a huge Bob's Burgers fan, so I knew I had to get it. No regrets. Poor guy has been through some very awkward and embarrassing moments in his life, but at least he can laugh at himself and invite his readers to laugh with him.

Imagine being stuck in traffic, laughing so hard you are crying, and wondering what all of the other people in their cars are thinking about you. That was this book. From start to finish.

First let me just say, this book is definitely not for everyone. If you've never watched Archer or Bob's Burgers, than you probably won't enjoy the crass humor that Benjamin uses in this book. As a fan of his animated characters though, I found myself laughing throughout most of the book. The whole time I was listening though, it was this image of Archer that kept surfacing in my mind.

Fast, funny read that made my workday go by very quickly.

Jon was a great narrator- of course. He was funny and mocking. Great as an audiobook.

Listened to this a few weeks ago. Honestly, if it wasn't Bob's voice and I read it instead of listened to it, I wouldn't have liked it. I laughed a little, but mostly couldn't wait to be done.

I've been audioing HP instead of doing my Christmas reread. I just want to keep listening but I'm pacing myself. I really enjoy both versions of the audio, especially sped up.😉

Meh. There were some funny bits, but mostly just lame and/or gross bits.

This book is a blast. H. Jon Benjamin has some fantastically funny stories to tell, and I related strongly to his stories about his illness. Definitely recommended for fans of his work. Hearing this as an audiobook made it so much better, and I can't imagine reading it in any other format.

This is definitely one for audiobook. It‘s best in smaller bites. Some of these bits are RITFL but others are not as strong.

RamsFan1963 Yes I listened to the audiobook and it was greatly enhanced by the authors unique and highly recognizable voice. 6y

I need an asterisk beside this pick saying audiobook only. H. Jon Benjamin has a unique voice that boosts the book up from just amusing to genuinely funny book.

I guess I expected more laughs from a comedian's memoir, but some early stories were more of a failure to do much of anything opposed to failing epically at some wacky scheme. Things picked up a bit at the end, but it was still just ultimately OK. Maybe since he reads the audio book, that is a better medium for this book. I'll stick to Archer.
This is an ARC copy but it just hit shelves this week.
