I have to say I almost bailed at the beginning as it was sooooo slow and I was to the point I didn‘t really care. Eventually, it picked up momentum and found its pace but not fast enough. Sandrine was an interesting enough character I stuck it out. ⭐️⭐️⭐️. Mystery, romance and suspense. #aprilbooklist #readingchallenge2022

⭐⭐⭐🌠 Must warn you, it was very slow-going initially. Glad I saw it through though.

Sandrine Salome flees New York and takes refuge with her grandmother, a famous courtesan in Belle Epoque Paris. On her arrival she finds her grandmother‘s beautiful mansion closed and her grandmother adamant Sandrine never visit the home. Drawn to it by a mysterious force, Sandrine soon becomes entangled in a web of passion and centuries old obsession. An absolutely spellbinding, mesmerizing unputdownable story. ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ #reviewathon #netgalley

So this appeared at my office yesterday. I added some to it today. That tagged book is my current audio and isn't on the shelf. I did add some Sarah J Maas to spread the TofG love

#dnf this one. I managed up to page 167 and was bored. Sandrine is whiny, L'Incendie (grandma) could have been better involved. It was difficult to determine what the conflict was and how Sandrine was going to evolve. Unfortunately didn't catch me. This is the first in a new series/trilogy coming out using a character who plays a key role in this book but isn't "present"

I may have not entirely liked the main character, however upon finishing this book, I was inspired to do some sketching.

The setting of the novel was amazing. I really felt transported to turn of the century France. The touches of occultism and the world of painting were fascinating and made this a more memorable read. I really enjoyed the references and parallels to popular gothic novels of the time. I became frustrated with Sandrine occasionally but it didn't detract from my enjoyment of the novel.

The more I read, the more disappointed and disgusted I am with Sandrine's family in France, especially grandma.

I'm really enjoying the atmosphere of this novel so far. The influence of the gothic has really grabbed me.
