Not book related. There are still a few finishing strands of floss to add before I can iron and frame it but my cross stitch is done @IndoorDame 🎉 Some #litsylove #jb mail is going out to you today. 💌
Thank you to all my #poutinepenpals for you patience. All my responses and intro cards are done and going out to you! 💕💌💕 On another note, I was listening to the tagged book while writing and just heartbroken for what these women had to go through. So many vibrant lives cut short way too soon.
1. I speak French and Serbian
2. When I lived in Switzerland and Japan I took lessons but never learned more than a few basic words and phrases in German or Japanese. When traveling I find that I can get by with English easier than massacring the local language.
Not gonna lie, this one was kinda disappointing. A relatively unremarkable and quite forgettable mystery, where disgraced journalist Leah Stevens moves to Pennsylvania, to start a new life as a teacher at the local high school and soon becomes involved in the disappearance of her roommate Emily. ⭐️⭐️ #netgalley #goodreads #seasonalreadingchallenge
I have been a horrible penpal and I apologize to my #poutinepenpals and #litsylove groups for being such a slacker 😔 So my goal for this week is to FINALLY make a dent in the pile of wonderful cards, letters and postcards I have received over the last many months. I‘m determined that not even slicing my pinkie finger over the weekend making cabbage salad is going to stop me. LET‘S DO THIS!!! 💌
From psychological/suspense thriller, mystery, science fiction, to climate fiction, dystopian and even a touch of horror, this book ticks off all those boxes. Throw into the mix a well developed, character driven plot, refreshing setting and intelligent, smooth as butter writing and you have a gripping, intoxicating, unputdownable and unpredictable read that I absolutely devoured. Brilliant!!! A favourite of 2019! ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ #netgalley
I just spent the last three days binge watching all three seasons of The Handmaid‘s Tale and well, now I‘m obsessed so I think this would be a good time for a reread. Spring/summer 2020 can‘t come soon enough! #obsession
From the creators of my favourite book series (Agent Pendergast 🙌) comes a brand new series with two intelligent and strong female leads. A mix of archeological history and FBI procedural, this first book did not disappoint! Looking forward to the next instalment. ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ #Booked2019 #Booked2019Summer #bookgiftedtoyou #seasonalreadingchallenge
Happy I listened to this on audio because I think it would have been a slog to get through it had I read it. Listening to it brought all the intricate descriptions to life. I‘m really looking forward to watch the movie. ⭐️⭐️⭐️ #Booked2019 #Booked2019Summer #booktomovie #seasonalreadingchallenge #birdoncover
Female author's are just killing it this year and another book added to my favourites of 2019! Hands down the creepiest, most unsettling and disturbing book I've read so far this year. At once both terrifying and heartbreaking, Melanie Golding weaves a compulsively readable, frightening atmospheric modern day psychological thriller from the tendrils of dark folklore and grim fairy tales. ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ #netgalley #goodreads #seasonalreadingchallenge
My companion during #schoolpickup this week. A beautifully written and touching story of compassion, understanding, acceptance and the uplifting and supportive power of friendship. ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ #Booked2019 #Booked2019Summer #diversemiddlegrade
Don't let the serene, bright, sunny cover fool you! This story is tumultuous and dark, just like the storm clouds brewing in the distance. The writing gave me a creepy, unsettling vibe and the constant feeling of an ax about to drop. A totally engrossing, compulsive page turner by the talented Canadian author. ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ #netgalley #goodreads #seasonalreadingchallenge #damselindistress
Narnia was such a huge part of my childhood so the premise intrigued me. The characters were wonderful on the surface with potential but should have been fleshed out more, which in turn would have eliminated a lot of the circling back over already hashed out ideas. The fantasy worlds were confusing and not well explained even though the subject was discussed on numerous occasions. A quick, easy read. ⭐️⭐️ #seasonalreadingchallenge #groupread
Ever since ‘Amazonia' all those years ago I have been a James Rollins fan and I'm happy to be getting back to one of my favourite series. Although not one of the stronger books in the Sigma Force series, 'The Eye of God' offers the armchair explorer a bit of everything - action, adventure, history, science and technology -wrapped up together with strong, intelligent writing and a kickass cast of characters. #seasonalreadingchallenge #takingaction
An epic adventure spanning the globe from colonial India, to Europe and North America. While I did appreciate the book for its descriptive settings and fast paced plot, I prefer my adventures more modern and intellectual. Too much gratuitous violence and graphic sex for me. I still recommend it for those who enjoy high octane adventures of revenge with brave men and damsels in distress. Out Sept. 3rd. ⭐️⭐️⭐️ #seasonalreadingchallenge #netgalley
An immensely creepy, obsessive and disturbing psychological thriller, wrought with sexual tension, so engrossing it had to be read in one sitting. Told through alternating POVs Kate, a writer and college professor and Sam, her student, the stalker/stalked relationship develops through fast paced, gripping writing. Sam's character was exceptionally written and I eagerly awaited the passages dedicated to him. ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ #reviewathon #netgalley
A historical retelling of Anastasia and the Romanovs with the promise of magic and an absolutely gorgeous cover - how could you not want to read this, right? What I got was a blatantly biased and vague historical retelling, with no explanation or real development of the magic and spell making process until the very end. This might be more suitable for a younger audience, not necessarily knowledgable of Russian history. ⭐️⭐️ #reviewathon #netgalley
I enjoyed this book for it's clever, punchy, sharp writing. It was thought provoking and delved into difficult women's issues. But there were times when I wanted to throw it across the room. The writing was so distracting and complicated to the point of confusion. The characters were horrible human beings and the entire plot summarized everything I dislike about reality TV: manipulative, hateful and hurtful. ⭐️⭐️⭐️ #reviewathon #netgalley
This was a compulsive, high energy, action driven story with a cast of well-rounded characters. A first contact story that had some definite Alien/Prometheus vibes. The book itself reads more like the manuscript for a movie then a book and I wouldn't be surprised if it makes it to the big screen. About halfway through, it gets bogged down by the description of the alien ‘ship‘ but on the whole would still recommend. ⭐️⭐️⭐️ #netgalley #reviewathon
A simple, convenient and predictable storyline with barely fleshed out characters and cheesy dialogue which somewhat redeemed itself with its ending. I read the second book in this series directly following this first book which slightly increased the enjoyment. Maybe it would have made for a more solid story if the contents of the two books had been combined. Thankfully, it was a fairly short, fast read. ⭐️⭐️ #reviewathon #netgalley
Just read how this is based on the author‘s own personal tragedy, her husband‘s 12 hour standoff with the police, his suicide and the impact this tragic event had on her family. My heart goes out to her and her family. Unfortunately, it doesn‘t make me like this novel more. Truth be told, I didn‘t enjoy it and skimmed through large sections without having missed much. A lot of writing about nothing. ⭐️⭐️ #netgalley #reviewathon
I am not a reader of romance novels but I will make an exception for Colleen Hoover. Another tearjerker about a couple‘s struggles with infertility. Her writing is impeccably gut wrenching, soul crushing and left me devastated and completely gutted. Not to be read without a box of Kleenex and not to be read in public, unless you enjoy being stared at while you ugly cry. Don‘t say I didn‘t warn you! ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ #netgalley #reviewathon
You‘ll think twice about taking the elevator after reading this book! What an absolutely exhilarating, heart pumping, adrenaline rush read! The writing is suspenseful, thrilling and so engrossing. I absolutely could not put this book down. My favourite thriller so far this year. Highly recommend! ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ #netgalley #stmartinspress #reviewathon
A year after the unexpected deaths of their parents, the five MacAllister siblings reunite at Camp Macaw for the reading of the will. An unusual final request by their father forces them to face a 20 year old tragedy, an unsolved mystery that one of the siblings is involved in. Not the author‘s strongest or my favourite novel of hers but nonetheless an entertaining fast read that had me hooked from the first page. ⭐️⭐️⭐️ #netgalley #reviewathon
Sandrine Salome flees New York and takes refuge with her grandmother, a famous courtesan in Belle Epoque Paris. On her arrival she finds her grandmother‘s beautiful mansion closed and her grandmother adamant Sandrine never visit the home. Drawn to it by a mysterious force, Sandrine soon becomes entangled in a web of passion and centuries old obsession. An absolutely spellbinding, mesmerizing unputdownable story. ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ #reviewathon #netgalley
This one was featured in ‘1000 Books to Read Before You Die‘ and caught my eye. A memoir, told through comics interspersed with prose, of the author‘s last few years with her parents, their health decline and death. Honestly this one hit close to home as my husband and I care for his aging parents and aunt. There was a lot of head nodding on my part, lots of laughs and even a few tears.⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ #Booked2019 #Booked2019summer #comicorgraphicnovel
A nicely written story, part psychological thriller, part family drama. The writing was atmospheric, dark, intensely emotional offering a raw, unflinching look family dysfunction. Although emotionally broken, the characters were likeable and relatable, even though their actions and/or words stirred in me negative emotions. A strong, impressive debut by Megan Collins and I look forward to reading more of her books. ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ #reviewathon #netgalley
Five strangers, trapped in the small town of Summerville, due to a freak storm, become targets of a deranged killer intent on revenge. Great premise but disappointing execution. The choppy writing, stilted dialogue and overuse of every possible plot and backstory cliché caused a few eye-rolls on my part. The only redeeming part was the unexpected ending. ⭐️⭐️ My oldest #netgalleyarc ? #reviewathon
Hi 🙋♀️my name is Sandra and I‘m addicted to requesting #netgalley arcs! This collage actually only represents page 1 of 3. 🤦♀️ My review ratio is 72% at the moment and I haven‘t set a goal per say but I‘m hoping the #reviewathon will help me clear up at least some of this backlog. Anyone else participating and up for the challenge? Looking forward to seeing everyones progress over the next 6 weeks!
Once a successful journalist, Alex Dale has lost her career and marriage to addiction. During her research for a freelance article, Alex meets Amy, a comatose woman her age, attacked at the age of 15 and left for dead, her attacker never caught. This was a solidly written debut psychological thriller/mystery. Engaging, intense, emotional read. ⭐️⭐️⭐️ Thank goodness for #netgalley #reviewathon for kicking my butt into gear to stop procrastinating.
Continuing with the #24in48 readathon this morning. My time is nothing to brag about but I‘m happy to have finished this book. Absolutely loved it! Often the second book in a series never lives up to the first but with A Torch Against the Night, the author has written another wonderfully crafted, intriguing, intelligent and hugely entertaining instalment to the story of Laia, Elias and Helene. ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ #muslimauthor #Booked2019 #Booked2019summer
