Star Trek: Discovery: Drastic Measures
Star Trek: Discovery: Drastic Measures | Dayton Ward
4 posts | 6 read | 3 to read
An original novel based upon the explosive new Star Trek TV series on CBS All Access! It is 2246, ten years prior to the Battle at the Binary Stars, and an aggressive contagion is ravaging the food supplies of the remote Federation colony Tarsus IV and the eight thousand people who call it home. Distress signals have been sent, but any meaningful assistance is weeks away. Lieutenant Commander Gabriel Lorca and a small team assigned to a Starfleet monitoring outpost are caught up in the escalating crisis, and bear witness as the colony's governor, Adrian Kodos, employs an unimaginable solution in order to prevent mass starvation. While awaiting transfer to her next assignment, Commander Philippa Georgiou is tasked with leading to Tarsus IV a small, hastily assembled group of first responders. It's hoped this advance party can help stabilize the situation until more aid arrives, but Georgiou and her team discover that they're too late--Governor Kodos has already implemented his heinous strategy for extending the colony's besieged food stores and safeguarding the community's long-term survival. In the midst of their rescue mission, Georgiou and Lorca must now hunt for the architect of this horrific tragedy and the man whom history will one day brand "Kodos the Executioner.."..

I'm glad I inadvertantly skipped book #2 (this one) and read books #1 and #3 first because if I'd gone in order, this one would have turned me off the rest of the series. Book #1 was okay, book #2 is just plain bad.

Lorca is modeled after all the bad masculine cliches in fiction that we're way past now.

I definitely recommend continuing on to #3 Fear Itself -- that book does right by all the characters.

RamsFan1963 I'm surprised to hear that, Dayton Ward is IMHO one of the best of the current crop of Star Trek writers. I have the first book, but I haven't got around to reading it yet. 5y
CampbellTaraL @RamsFan1963 I'll have to check out some of his other Star Trek work, this was my first read but I'm not opposed to giving another try. This book feels more like the editors were asleep or simply didn't give a rip which is such a disservice. 5y
RamsFan1963 If you want to read more of his books, I highly recommend the Star Trek: Vanguard series. It takes place around the time of the original series, some familiar faces pop in and out and it ties in well with the pre-Kelvin Star Trek chronology. 5y
CampbellTaraL @RamsFan1963 Sweet, I'll check it out. Thank you! 5y

I gave it over 100 pages and... I just can't. It doesn't have what I'm looking for in Trek ephemera aka goofy detail or fun character interactions. It does have... hanging out with Kodos the Executioner? Who asked for that?

khooliha Plus, Prime Lorca os basically Mirror Lorca with a tragically dead girlfriend to stoke his rage? How about?? No thanks??? 6y

Have heard this book is bad, which is really motivating me to jump in, you can be sure!

khooliha The whole thing is a real missed opportunity, what with Prime Lorca being around and all. 7y
