I'm glad I inadvertantly skipped book #2 (this one) and read books #1 and #3 first because if I'd gone in order, this one would have turned me off the rest of the series. Book #1 was okay, book #2 is just plain bad.

Lorca is modeled after all the bad masculine cliches in fiction that we're way past now.

I definitely recommend continuing on to #3 Fear Itself -- that book does right by all the characters.

RamsFan1963 I'm surprised to hear that, Dayton Ward is IMHO one of the best of the current crop of Star Trek writers. I have the first book, but I haven't got around to reading it yet. 5y

CampbellTaraL @RamsFan1963 I'll have to check out some of his other Star Trek work, this was my first read but I'm not opposed to giving another try. This book feels more like the editors were asleep or simply didn't give a rip which is such a disservice. 5y

RamsFan1963 If you want to read more of his books, I highly recommend the Star Trek: Vanguard series. It takes place around the time of the original series, some familiar faces pop in and out and it ties in well with the pre-Kelvin Star Trek chronology. 5y

I gave it over 100 pages and... I just can't. It doesn't have what I'm looking for in Trek ephemera aka goofy detail or fun character interactions. It does have... hanging out with Kodos the Executioner? Who asked for that?
