pickA Catholic Syrian American family living in 1950s Alabama dealing with domestic abuse and racism. This is a dark story told by Anna, the ultimate unreliable narrator. There were a whole lot of twists and turns I was not expecting. Even though Anna made some serious wtf decisions, I was totally rooting for her and feeling her pain. Really impressive debut novel.
so-soAll in all, this was not a bad book but I am so sick and tired of the “beaten woman” trope.
pickLoved this book from beginning to end. It has so many layers; mother daughter relationship, husband and wife, racism in the south, all broken, trying to be mended. Interesting that a Mockingbird appears throughout the story, while we uncover how our protagonist stands up for a Blackman trying to rise above his station. Good stuff!
pickI just finished this book. I‘ve read some reviews stating that the book is depressing and oppressively sad. Well, I guess that‘s one way to view it. Although the story does contain domestic abuse, racism, oppression, and alcoholism, the author writes beautifully and presents a truthful snapshot of historical fiction. With just a surface view, the story can be depressing, but by diving in, you‘ll notice just how multi layered and complex it is.
I was kind of meh while pursuing the books available for January on Amazon. I ended up choosing this one. It sounds really good. Now I should maybe start reading the books I download each month from Amazon.
