I FORCED A SMILE. 'I'M NOT AFRAID.' After doing herself near-fatal damage, Kit Learmonth has come home. But it's a place she hardly recognises: the mermaids are hiding, the witch has packed up her cauldron and the pirates have sailed to more bountiful shores. In their place is Neverland and its inhabitants - damaged teens too sick to be in regular school, but not sick enough to be institutionalised, watched over by her psychiatrist uncle. And Kit is one of them. Kit has a choice. She can use illicit night-time adventures with her friends and mysterious new boy Rohan to avoid the truth. Or she can separate harsh reality from childhood fantasy and try to remember what happened on the night of her parents' deaths. What really prompted her family's departure from the island? Was there a monster who drove them away? Is the monster still there? The more Kit uncovers, the more she realises that perhaps she should be afraid .

A haunting & beautifully written story of a teenage girl whoes parents died in a boat accident. She's under the care of her uncle who's also her shrink, moving back to the island she once grew up in but now a home for teenagers with different mental illness, looking at issues like self harm, suicide, panic attack. How she escape through imaginations & fantasy. Lots of Odyssey & Peter Pan references. 5⭐️

I was hearing so much about this book that despite my HUGE TBR pile I just had to get it! Finished it in two mornings. Author is young woman from Adelaide and I think she has done an excellent job of dealing with some mental health issues in a very readable story. @MrsMalaprop

I really enjoyed this book. Kit Learmonth was such a interesting complex character. A great story with themes of mental illness, it also mixed in Peter Pan and Greek mythology. Despite it's name this is not a Peter Pan retelling but a Australian YA contemporary (I knew this going in).

BrokenBookaholic Can I ask for an overview?? Don‘t worry if it‘s too much trouble 7y
Missusb Intense. Over at GR, I wrote ‘Tough read, with Kit‘s mental health at its core. Compelling‘. @BrokenBookaholic 7y
