Flight of the Raven
Flight of the Raven | Jean-Pierre Gibrat
2 posts | 2 read | 8 to read
Winner of the Best Artist Award at the Angoul?me Festival! Jean-Pierre Gibrat's lushly colored graphic novel is one of the most stunningly beautiful comics of the 21st Century. The story takes place in Paris during the German Occupation and stars a memorable heroine in the French Resistance fighter named Jeanne. With the help of an apolitical cat burglar named Fran?ois, she tries to save her comrades, including her missing sister C?cile, from the Gestapo. They walk in the places between shadows, as Gibrat uses the evocative Paris rooftops and river barges on the Seine almost as separate characters. The book also includes a portfolio of pin-ups featuring its heroine.

This is almost a so-so, but ultimately the art won me over and kind of made up for the meandering first half of the story. This WW2 story takes place in occupied France and has a healthy dose of intrigue, a dash of danger, a sprinkling of romance, and a somewhat hopeful ending.

In this WW2 graphic novel, with resistance operatives and thieves working together, this German soldier is quite the #ratbastard
