pickI enjoyed this look back at Alice Garner‘s university years. Alice is Australian writing icon Helen Garner‘s daughter. We were at uni around the same time, although on opposite sides of the country. I followed Alice‘s acting career as a young adult. She moved away from acting and is a historian and musician. She and her mum Helen have adjoining properties and are very close.
I feel very fortunate to have a mum who has generally not offered me unsolicited advice. Therefore on the rare occasions she has, I have listened (although not necessarily followed her advice) 😄🙏💕. Not sure I can say the same for my parenting though 🤔😬.
Alice is my age (52). I try to tell my kids, 2 of whom are currently at uni, how I hand-wrote my uni essays. I bought my first desk-top computer & printer when I was 21. Unlike Alice I didn‘t do a touch-typing course. I remember it being an option in high school, but even then I was like, “Oh I‘m not falling into those gender expectations 😒.” I did Creative Writing instead (& have regretted my inability to properly touch-type ever since) 🤣😜.
Reading the Prologue of this obscure Australian memoir written in 2006, reflecting on her time at the 1996 Cannes Film Festival, I was surprised to see this name mentioned in passing. #currentlyreading
Had the most perfect night out with @Rissreads . We met up at Elizabeth‘s 2nd hand bookshop where I picked up this gem, a memoir by Helen Garner‘s daughter. Japanese food followed, with beer and great conversation. And then…..we went to see LIZZO live in concert on the first show of her Australian tour. Could. Not. Ask. For. More. 🙏🤩😍✨
pickAttracted to this 1 because she's the daughter of my fav Oz author, Helen Garner. Reliving my uni days sans goon bag lunchtime wine. The step dad of the step kids has released me of my duties and my mum in law arrives soon to take over so I can get some jobs done before school starts back in a week or so 😭. Blissing out while I await the delivery of @Miss__astrid bridesmaid dress to try on for her upcoming wedding in France then a facial later!
