I was hoping this book would make me appreciate Cora. It didn't. I appreciate the AI Sam more. Alec Ryder a bit more. But not Cora and that's why I picked this up. The writing was fine it was that I didn't care for for the character.. still.

So I‘ve never played the Mass Effect video game series, but decided to give the book a chance since it was co-written by N. K. Jemisin and I could count it towards my author a month count. The book started off slow for me and I almost walked away, but just over halfway through it began to pick up for me and held my attention. While this was an interesting world, I doubt I‘ll continue in it. #AuthorAMonth
I picked this up because N. K. Jemisin is an author. I didn‘t know what to expect, but I ended up really liking it. I‘ll probably read the next one.
Seems I‘m in book bounce mode. I tried to read some Jackie Collins, but I wasn‘t in quite the right mood for Rich People Behaving Badly so I switched to some SF. Now I‘m bailing on this one about a third of the way through. It‘s probably not bad, but it just ain‘t grabbing me. Maybe it‘s one of those tie-ins where you really do need to know the source material so you can spot all the cool bits. (I bought it because of Jemisin‘s involvement.)
Presenting my April Must-Reads list:
🏵 an ARC I‘ve sat on for way too long
🏵 a media tie-in I bought back in November because it‘s by N.K. Jemisin (and it was $0.99, and my library doesn‘t own it)
🏵 a loooooong anthology I‘ve been working on since late last year
🏵 a Jackie Collins novel from my chunksters checklist
I loooooved finding out more background info about the Andromeda Initiative! I also got some good info about the Mass Effect universe in general. I miss my space friends - but I love that I can still find out more in the books!
“Against chaos - we stand. Against death - we refuse.”
“What are you waiting for? It‘s only the unknown.” 🌌
“There is always a moment where the familiar becomes the strange.”
“We are travelers, constantly moving forward - and looking back. Alone and as one, we have no choice but to try. For our insatiable curiosity. For our fear of what should happen if we don‘t. You can be that explorer. We will say goodbye, and you will look back one last time - and know that wherever you go, we will be with you.”
That was a goddamn delight. NK Jemisin made me laugh aloud several times—and I adore Cora even more now.
Mixing my BioWare, but: Relax, darling. It‘s spa day.
So excited to read the amazing N.K. Jemisin play around in the MEA sandbox.
