Siege of Krishnapur
Siege of Krishnapur | J G Farrell
Winner of the Booker Prize. India, 1857--the year of the Great Mutiny, when Muslim soldiers turned in bloody rebellion on their British overlords. This time of convulsion is the subject of J. G. Farrell's "The Siege of Krishnapur," widely considered one of the finest British novels of the last fifty years. Farrell's story is set in an isolated Victorian outpost on the subcontinent. Rumors of strife filter in from afar, and yet the members of the colonial community remain confident of their military and, above all, moral superiority. But when they find themselves under actual siege, the true character of their dominion--at once brutal, blundering, and wistful--is soon revealed. "The Siege of Krishnapur" is a companion to "Troubles," about the Easter 1916 rebellion in Ireland, and "The Singapore Grip," which takes place just before World War II, as the sun begins to set upon the British Empire. Together these three novels offer an unequaled picture of the follies of empire.

Next read! This is my second book of the Empire trilogy. I loved Farrell‘s style in Troubles, so I have high hopes for this one

AlaMich I loved Troubles as well so I started this one but only got a about 20 pages in. Not sure if it was the book or me or the timing. 🤷🏻‍♀️ 2y
sisilia @AlaMich It‘s hard to get into 😵‍💫 2y

Pickpick

The British and mixed-race inhabitants of the fictitious town of Krishnapur are beseiged by the sepoys and their allies in 1857.

It didn't quite go in the direction I was expecting it to but it was interesting as an account of life under siege.

MrT This was one of my O Level English readlists back in 1983/84. I remember it being very long and quiet interesting about the time period and life India back then. 3y

Fleury was confronted, as he toiled clumsily with the sponging rod in the dust and smoke, with a simple fact about human nature which he had never considered before: nobody is superior to anyone else, he only may be better at doing a specific thing.

It always makes me nervous to pack a new book for my commute. So much reading time wasted if it doesn‘t hold my attention!

TheAromaofBooks SAME! I usually end up sneaking my Kindle it as well JUST IN CASE 😆 5y

Chili @Kristelh I am liking it too. I hope to finish today. I feel like I‘m there because of the hot weather. 😅 7y
Kristelh @Chili yes, one of the hottest Memorial Days I can recall. 7y
Chili @Kristelh It‘s already 81 and is supposed to get to 85 today and 89 tomorrow. I wish I could bottle some of this heat and let it loose in January and February when I‘m turning into a human popsicle. 😁 7y
Kristelh @Chili More than that, wish I could bottle the day light so we could enjoy more light in winter. 7y

Pickpick

Set in India in 1857. In the fictional town of Krishnapur, there is a mutiny against the British. This town is only a little dot in a vast dusty terrain. But all my attention has been focussed here during this book.
The characters have won my heart, the Collector surrounded by all his valuable pieces of art , his English standards. What a shock when the Siege happens & takes away all that defined him. All the characters are changed.

Cathythoughts This book is imprinted in my memory & my heart. The intricate descriptions of cherubs on ornate candlesticks, as the Siege continues. All the bizarre details of the characters, It's brilliance is in the details: the two parakeets on the tamarind tree .........not an easy read (edited) 7y
BarbaraBB Great review! 7y
Cathythoughts @BarbaraBB thankyou 🙏 7y
batsy Fab review. I have one of JG Farrell's books and heard only good things about him but haven't got around to it 😳 7y
Cathythoughts @batsy thanks ! Yes I think they are part of a Trilogy, there's one about the Irish uprising too. He is a beautiful, clear writer. He came to live in Ireland in his 40's and died in a drowning accident. Salman Rushdie said he would have become one of the major english novelists had he lived. (edited) 7y

I had a hard time reading this book, it took me over a week while it isn't a difficult read. It just didn't capture me, despite the good plot and the English behaving so very Englishly even in the circumstances of their Residence being under siege. I don't know what was missing for me. #1001books #booker #manbooker Picture: Rothko Exhibition in The Hague
