Daisy's starting a new job and stylish city life, but mage-hunters out for her dark magic threaten to destroy her vogue image. In the flourishing metropolis of Soot City (a warped version of 1920s Chicago), progressive ideals reign and the old ways of magic and liquid mana are forbidden. Daisy Dell is a Modern Girl stylish, educated and independent keen to establish herself in the city but reluctant to give up the taboo magic inherited from her grandmother. Her new job takes her to unexpected places, and she gets more attention than she had hoped for. When bounty hunters start combing the city for magicians, Daisy must decide whether to stay with her new employer even if it means revealing the grim source of her occult powers. File Under: Fantasy

Pickpick

At the end of the day Squidapus felt the negatives were outweighed by the positives; the world of a 1920s magical prohibition underground for magicians, well-written and with non-binary and sexual minority characters won him over despite a questionable relationship that develops 3/4 through and a bit of an unlikable main character. Daisy aspires to be a shallow girl focused on modern clothes, clubs and a life where she doesn't apply herself ever.

Squidapus just started this book about a swingin' gal during some anachronistic 20s fantasy period with magic and ogres and speakeasies! Seems like fun! Squidapus is a big urban fantasy lover.

Clare-Dragonfly What an awesome cover, and it sounds super fun! 5y

I caught Biscuits mid-yawn! Imagine 1920s Chicago, but at the foot of a volcano, and instead of illegal booze, it‘s illegal magic. Daisy is a Modern Girl, and her new job as a typist is about to get more complicated as word of her unusual magic spreads. Gower‘s world is interesting, and queer (in both senses of the word). Daisy is equal parts naive and tough as nails. Moonshine is a gem in the urban fantasy world. Not perfect, but refreshing.
