The Immortal Life of Henrietta Lacks
The Immortal Life of Henrietta Lacks: Study Guide | Pembroke Notes
6 posts | 16 read | 3 to read
How to Use This Book This book is to be used alongside the bestselling book, The Immortal Life of Henrietta Lacks by Rebecca Skloot for anyone interested in learning about one of the most important tools in medicine, vital for developing the polio vaccine, cloning, gene mapping, and more, the HeLa cells. This is also the story of the collision between ethics, race, and medicine; of scientific discovery and faith healing; and a daughter consumed with questions about the mother she never knew. For students: The study questions are in order and follow Rebecca Skloot s narrative. Answer questions as you read the book. Answers follow each question. For teachers: This is an easy and interesting resource to help your students learn about a specific tool used in medicine, the HeLa cell and how it originated and the impact its discovery had on medicine and the population. Use your own unique teaching style to supplement the Pembroke Notes with engaging activities and links for further investigating. With the new Common Core standards and a push to increased rigor, I have added a Writing Workshop section at the end of my book to help you with writing assignments. For homeschools: Your high school student will love the easy guide to help him/her in her reading The Immortal Life of Henrietta Lacks. Parents, be prepared for active discussions with your teenager while you read along. A Writing Workshop is supplied at the end of the book as a guide."

Very compassionate uncovering of Henrietta's story and the impact on sciene and medicine her cells have had and continue to have to this day. It's a very personal, tragic story of the Lack family due to the complete ignorance and shocking disregard they were kept in for decades. This is all the more alarming because of the extraordinary impact Henritta Lacks's cells (HELA) have had in saving millions of lives.

This is one of those books I‘ve been meaning to read for many years.
The story of HeLa cells was fascinating. And the author explains everything a way that is very accessible and understandable.
It is intertwined with the story of Henriettas family and children, which is quite tragic. I do wish this part of the story had a happier ending, but the real world is the real world.

TiredLibrarian I loved this book! Our local high school has added it to their reading list. 5y
Riveted_Reader_Melissa I finally read that one this year too....such an excellent book, both the highs and lows and side tangents in their journey. 5y

Haven‘t been able to post much but I‘m still trying to read.

Currently listening to this book, finally, and having anxiety attacks about moving haha.

In the meantime:

I have a booth at the Fredericksburg Punk Rock Flea Market this Saturday! If you‘re around, there‘s going to be a lot of awesome stuff there.

This obviously isn't my photo but I couldn't add a comment without recognising Henrietta. This book was powerful, beautiful and a wonderful memory to one of the most important women that has ever lived.

This is not a story. Henrietta Lacks was real... and the most remarkable woman I've ever read. She lives in almost every single one of us - and that's not me speaking metaphorically either. This book taught me that one can live better in death than they ever did in life.

Gezemice This is an amazing book. It raises so many different issues that I still keep thinking about. It is also a great read! 9y
