Interesting. This book came out in 2012, but I recently acquired what was an advanced copy of it back then. And apparently, by the time it was published, they changed the title.

A different kind of #ThrowbackThursday #TBT my photo from Litsy about 3 months ago.... the question was how many could I finish in 2016 (well technically it's Jan 2017, but close enough). The answer: 21.5 out of 63. LOL 😂😂. So a third~ish.

Guess that means the rest are for this year!

See @BookishFeminist the answer is Yes, I must actually have just been zooming out!

BookishFeminist 😂😂😂 your tbr screenshots are everything bc your acquisitions outpace your reading lol 8y
Riveted_Reader_Melissa @BookishFeminist That's about the size of it... I have a plan, but then I see something shiny and read that first...just in my case the something shiny is a book at the library, on OverDrive, on Hoopla, a new purchase, etc. 8y
BookishFeminist @Riveted_Reader_Melissa this is why I can't do screen shots 😂 8y
Gezemice I would say 21.5 in three months is a lot! Give yourself a pat :) 8y

"Scientists have found that approximately 25 percent of the human population is comprised of assholes; 25 percent, idiots; 25 percent, idiotic assholes; and 25 percent, people who are smart or nice or both."

⬆️I don't know where the study is proving this as a fact, but it feels like it has the right level of "truthiness" to me.... plus I should add that of those last 25% the majority have found Litsy or need to be introduced to it soon! ?

KVanRead Wow. Well said. Both the book and you. Yay Litsy 😊 8y

This part, and a few others like it, cracked me up when I read this. I think we've all run into this person somewhere at sometime or another.

Suet624 Oh boy. I used to work at City Hall and there were definitely people like that. Stubborn about it too. 8y
Riveted_Reader_Melissa @Suet624 He also mentions the nice and very helpful ones (I'm guessing like you), and the experience when they encounter them. But yes, this description definitely reminded me of someone I used to work with also. 8y
Suet624 @Riveted_Reader_Melissa, Thanks. With all humbleness I will admit that there were often tears of gratitude from those folks I assisted. It's sadly astounding when one actually encounters a caring and compassionate "bureaucrat". And it's important to remember we're just as likely to run into them as the unhelpful ones. 8y
Riveted_Reader_Melissa @Suet624 There's a short section in the book about how to handle the difficult to budge ones, and also to show appreciation for the great ones! 8y

KVanRead 😡So true. It has never been easier to fact check and yet people just don't seem to care. They simply pick the 'facts' that support their opinions and feelings. And the impatience of the 24 news cycle doesn't help. While the fact checkers are calling foul they're already moving on to the next story. 8y
Riveted_Reader_Melissa @KVanRead Closer to the end he lists the neutral fact checking websites to look some things up for yourself.... however he also mentions how some now claim the fact-checkers are biased liberal media biased too. 8y
KVanRead @Riveted_Reader_Melissa Yes, I've had people tell me that when I've tried to point out they were spreading false news on FB. 😒 8y

Pickpick

Insiders' stories from the truth seekers/dirt diggers, who do the actual leg work of digging up the facts, supported with actual documentation, in the labyrinth of gov't offices armed only with the public info act. Often reads like some noir PI on the trail of the evidence that will spring the case wide open... after dodging disgruntled record's clerks, surviving reading mind-numbing minutia for hours, and occasionally evading an unknown tail. 👍

BookishFeminist 😂😂😂 I feel like you just zoom out every week and it's exponentially bigger 8y
KVanRead Wow. Sooo many good ones! Do you have a shortlist? Or is this it?😂 8y
Riveted_Reader_Melissa @BookishFeminist Litsy adds them faster than I can read them! And I think there are at least 10 new comics that I completely Blame on Litsy! (Shakes first at Litsians, stop posting such great reviews) Hahaha! 8y
Riveted_Reader_Melissa @KVanRead Super short list... finish the 4 I have started already (Bloodlines, We're With Nobody, Harry Potter and the Cursed Child, and Hard Choices), plus get into and finish All the Single Ladies. And in my dreams all before Election Day, Hahaha! After that, start working my way through the pile that the library is going to want back this month! 8y
queerbookreader I recommend the Leia comic, it's awesome. And the Cursed Child can be blown through super quick if you sit down and dedicate like 1.5 hrs to it in one go 8y
Riveted_Reader_Melissa @lemonlime799 I think your posts are where I saw the Leia comic! 8y
Riveted_Reader_Melissa @KVanRead & @BookishFeminist I'm going to join @librariana for a #NaNoReadMo that might be the only way to make a dent here! 8y
KVanRead @Riveted_Reader_Melissa All those books sound better than following the election coverage! Have fun and good luck! 8y
BookishFeminist @Riveted_Reader_Melissa Sign me up! I won't write a novel but I will read them all! 😂 8y
Librariana Yes!! The more the merrier!! Join me on this adventure, ladies! @BookishFeminist @Riveted_Reader_Melissa 8y

*** I have to agree with that, and it's very frustrating for us linear, fact loving, reading people.

DGRachel A sad truth 😢 8y
alisahar I've been really struck by that this election. I believe in dialoguing with people I disagree with and I try to do that when I think it can be a productive conversation. But I feel more all the time that we're not even operating with the same set of facts and that makes dialogue near impossible. 8y
angrylilasian @alisahar Well said. But what can we expect when one of the candidate thinks he's in a reality show. 🙄 8y
Riveted_Reader_Melissa @alisahar I agree, I feel like I'm speaking with some really in-deep conspiracy theorists lately. 8y

of what you think of him, correctly characterized as part of “a network of misinformation that in a new media era can get churned out there constantly.” Our primary aim (...) is to help guide the political debate through the real, documented world, where talking points are derived from actual facts rather than from voices emanating from a planet far, far away. (...) our work is utterly dependent on locating the documentation."

...I just stared at her. All I was asking for were some straightforward tax documents, public records deposited in her office for anyone—for all—to see.

“I mean, what are you going to do with it?”

“It doesn‘t really matter, does it?” I said. Because it didn‘t, and she knew it. This is America. What we were looking for is part of the public record, and why we wanted it was nobody‘s business but our own."

**Sounds like an interesting beginning
