I think this is Schwab‘s best book yet. It‘s like she tried to write the perfect vampire book specifically for me. I loved this.

Could it be partially because I read and loved Ann Rice as a teen? Maybe. Could it be partially because I love a good sapphic historical fantasy? Yes probably.
Anyway, 5⭐️ for me!

Sparklemn I‘m not a big fan of vampires or historical fiction, but I‘m loving this! 1d

Really enjoyed this one…. Got me to and from Las Vegas this weekend!

BirdLaVie I read so many frustrated reviews of this and it took me forever to start, but I‘m currently finishing it up and have enjoyed it, too! 🥂 1w
Sarahreadstoomuch @BirdLaVie fantastic! I can see how it could below to start…. I do so much on audio these days, and that helps me push through I think; keeps me going. 1w

I loved the writing styles but the book have been half as long and told the same story.. it really dragged at the start but I liked the overarching story and wanted to know more so I continued. Then all of a sudden it was picking up, only to rush in the end. The pacing felt completely off 🥲 overall it had great lore but it‘s not a favourite

TieDyeDude That's a fair review. I loved it overall, but the beginning was a little slow, and I didn't enjoy the non-linear structure. I kinda expected though, after reading Addie LaRue, that she'd spend a good deal of time meditating on life as an immortal. 2mo
BirdLaVie I‘ve been holding off on starting this one because so many people have commented on the pacing! What a shame. 2mo
michellelav @TieDyeDude this is the only book I‘ve read by this author.. I‘ve heard a lot about Addie Larue tho. Maybe I‘ll try it down the road 😁 2mo

I made these SWAPS to give away at the National Book Festival today...one for each book being represented at the festival that I'd read. Unfortunately, last night plans changed and I wasn't able to go :( I guess now they can be reminders of all the great books I read this summer.

Lesbian vampire romance/revenge. Not much else I can say that others haven‘t already. I enjoyed this. Audio version has two narrators which was really helpful although I struggled with the Irish accent at times. Two intertwined stories, the older one much better than the modern one. Good summer audio.

Terrible photo, excellent fantasy novel!
It did not disappoint. Yes, it's a bit repetitive, yes, it's obviously not believable but it is fun and has super vocabulary and descriptive language. Plus, you know, toxic lesbian vampires!!

A really good month for me! I rarely read new releases, and I finished two this month. And I enjoyed all of these titles a lot: (Camp Damascus is the only one that was rated less than 4 stars, and that was just because I didn't think I would have enjoyed reading it as much as I did listening to the audio).

Vampires lasting through the centuries allow Schwab to take us time traveling. Not her best work, but a great beach read. The lore is deep, the betrayals are epic, but it becomes a bit repetitive. The novel could have used a strong editor.

TOXIC LESBIAN VAMPIRES they say!!!! Why sure, why not lol!

Well I loved The Invisible Life of Addie LaLure so this didn‘t take much to grab this one up. It‘s not just the storylines that interesting or the fascinating characters she creates. It‘s the absolute magical use of words that make each sentence sing like pure poetry! Her writing styles makes me never want her books to end!

Loved sinking teeth into this one!

Lesliereadsalot In line for this one. Sounds great! 4mo

This was a meandering sapphic vampire tale. It wasn't told in a straight fashion and did not stay with the original character's point of view. I had to go with the flow, but I did like it. The story took a long time to reach its destination, but I enjoyed the scenery.

I liked this overall, but did find it flawed. I loved the early story of the major character, Maria, but as the book goes on, we start seeing her more through others‘ eyes than her own and I missed seeing her perspective. Also, Alice‘s backstory pops in throughout the book and it just dragged. I found it boring and wasn‘t invested. So, a lower pick overall for me.

TieDyeDude I didn't give much thought to the shift away from Maria's POV, but I believe it happens after she starts to lose her humanity. Maybe Schwab couldn't find a way to write for write for her after that. I agree, though, that Alice's backstory wasn't very engaging. Maybe it was too spread out? Alice usually got 10-20 pages between the 50+ pages of the other characters. 4mo
Hooked_on_books @TieDyeDude I do think her backstory being spread out was part of the problem. But I also tried to think about how it would read if all put together, and I‘m still not sure I‘d find it compelling. And good point about Maria. I just really liked her as a character and think her devolution would have been fascinating. 4mo

I'm a fan of V E., and though I don't read a lot of vampire books, but I really enjoyed this. Spanning miles and centuries, the damaged lives of a trio of "toxic lesbian vampires" are explored in brutal, gory, and sapphic detail. While on the slower side, I enjoyed the journey, and the time jumps and switching between characters' POVs, which have been peeves of mine recently, were paced well.

TieDyeDude I also love the aspects of vampire lore that Schwab chose to use vs. discard, and it felt like she really paid attention to her world. One line that really struck me was "Alice rises from the floor on legs that should be stiff, but aren't". Because she doesn't have blood pumping muscles that would be restricted from sitting too long. It is a simple line that, to me, shows great care in the writing. 5mo
JenlovesJT47 I‘ve never read anything of hers. What would you recommend first? 5mo
Kar2b On the fence about reading this one, because pacing is a make it or break it for me. My favorite of hers is The Invisible Life of Addie LaRue. 5mo
See All 8 Comments
TieDyeDude @JenlovesJT47 I absolutely adored The Invisible Life of Addie LaRue, which is historical fiction/magical realism. There is also her Shades of Magic trilogy, which is more straight-forward magic-based fantasy. 5mo
TieDyeDude @Kar2b Addie is my favorite, too. In my opinion, Bury Our Bones has pretty similar pacing; there are spans of text where the characters are dealing with immortality and relationships with mortals, following their lives over time where we are in their head, but it is more character development that plot progression. I read maybe 100 pages, and stopped for a couple weeks because I was going on vacation and didn't want to lug it around, but... 5mo
TieDyeDude @Kar2b last weekend, I read a good 300 pages in two days (which is a lot for me 😁) (edited) 5mo
JenlovesJT47 Thanks!! Addie has been on my TBR for awhile now, bumping it up! 5mo
Kar2b @TieDyeDude Hmmm… I may try it at some point, but my TBR is so long that I‘m not feeling an urgent need to add it 😂 4mo

Schwab is one of the more literate authors writing today. Her narrative is always beautifully rendered and this book is no exception. However I am just so done with vampire stories. And really, Anne Rice wrote this story 50 years ago. Not a favorite read for me but I imagine it will be a blockbuster.

I absolutely love V.E. Schwab's writing, which never fails to hold my attention. With toxic lesbian vampires and themes of freedom and power, obsession, hunger, grief, and control, this one gets all the stars from me. From V.E. Schwab: “Each of my stories can be distilled down to a few important emotional beats... For Bones, each of the women was defined by a word: head, heart, hunger.“

Excellent book. While I don't believe it was quite as good as her Addie LaRue book, it is still excellent. Grabs you and won't let go. And I'm not big on books about or with vampires. lol I loved it.

Wow 🤩 for once the hype is correct on this one Schwab‘s best yet in my opinion, I really enjoyed Addie LaRue but this is even better , clever plotting fantastic characters , totally absorbing , loved the historical blend with modern day and three protagonists all very different . This will be in my top ten maybe even top five books 📚 of the year - loved it ,

I had to sit with this for a few minutes before I reviewed. This was a beautifully haunting gothic story of love, freedom, and desire.the whole story even the ugly parts were written with such rich prose just really masterful! With that being said, I wanted more in the pacing and plot and less reiteration 4🌟

I‘m not a lover of all books in the fantasy genre but count me in on any VE Schwab book every time. There are three MC‘s here and while I was ready for a Sabine‘s timeline to give way to the worlds of Lottie and Alice, all 3 timelines were great and in the end I appreciate the chapters given to Sabine. …Also pride month so might as well make it gay🏳️‍🌈

Though this vampire story unfolds a bit slowly, the latter half flew by & I read late into the night (fitting for a vampire story). I enjoyed the varied settings but didn‘t really connect with any of the three narrators. I liked Schwab‘s spin on vampire lore, but I have to admit that at times this really felt like an all female re-imagining of INTERVIEW WITH THE VAMPIRE which was a bit disappointing. The ending, while appropriate, was a let down.

I won an ARC of this book without knowing what it was about, but ended up really enjoying this intense vampire tale. The story takes place on multiple timelines, following the lives of Maria, a young woman in Spain, and Alice, a Scottish student studying abroad in Boston. Each of their lives are changed forever when they meet an intriguing stranger; for Maria, it's Sabine, a widow and herbalist, while for Alice it's Lottie. That ending, though!

vlwelser I had one of these. It took me 100ish pages to realize it was vampires. 😂 7mo
