Lies That Comfort and Betray
Lies That Comfort and Betray | Rosemary Simpson

Heiress Prudence MacKenzie is a valuable partner to attorney Geoffrey Hunter, despite the fact that women are not admitted to the bar in New Yorks Gilded Age. And though their office is a comfortable distance from the violence that haunts the citys slums, the firm of Hunter and MacKenzie is about to come dangerously close to an unstoppable killer . . . LIES THAT COMFORT AND BETRAY The murders in Whitechapel are shocking enough to make news worldwide, and in the autumn of 1888, Geoffrey and Prudence find the stories in the New York Herald quite unsettling. But London is not the only city to be terrorized by a mad butcher. Nora Kenny makes the occasional journey on the Staten Island ferry to work in Prudences Fifth Avenue house, just as her mother once served Prudences mother. As little girls, they played freely together, before retreating into their respective social classes. Still, they remain fond of each other. But when Nora slips away to Saint Anselms one chilly Saturday to confess her sins and never returns, Prudence is alarmed. And when Noras body is discovered in a local park, Prudence is devastated. Nora will not be the only young woman to fall victim, but the police are uncertain what they are dealing with. Has the Ripper sailed across the Atlantic to find a new hunting ground? Is some disturbed soul copying his crimes? A former Pinkerton agent, Geoffrey intends to step in where the New York Metropolitan Police seem to be failing, and Prudence is just as determined to protect the poor, vulnerable females being targeted. But a killer with a disordered mind and an incomprehensible motive may prove too elusive for even this experienced pair to outwit. From the author of What the Dead Leave Behind, this is a suspenseful and richly atmospheric mystery that captures both the elegance and sophistication of nineteenth-century New York, and the secrets and bloody terrors that lurked behind its gilded facades.

I am really enjoying these mysteries. Prudence is much more assertive than most women of her time and “station”, but I like her. Realistic? I don‘t know, but the entire atmostphere/setting of the book is done really well, I think. With how these murders are happening, there is some gore, but that doesn‘t bother me. There was more going on than the murders in this book, so even when things appeared to be drawing to a close, there was more to come

I have completed the Fall prompts for #booked2019 and have one book left from Summer to complete the challenge! Except for Among The Hidden (3.5 stars) I consider them all 4.5-5 star reads for me!
The question by Lies that comfort and betray is because protagonist becomes addicted to Opium in the book, but the main story is the mystery.

Ruthiella Well done! 😁 4y

Excellent mystery all the way around. Compelling characters, evocative setting, several suspects and lots of twists to the plot. I didn‘t realize that this is the second of a series. I want to go back and read the first book, but I had no problem not having the backstory. Thanks again, @tdrosebud

tdrosebud I'm glad you liked it! 5y

So good! @Librarybelle I‘m positive I should be doing schoolwork but I am starting the third book in a few minutes. I‘m really enjoying these books. She does seem to have a formulaic style but I love the characters and the mystery was so interesting. And historical NYC. Highly Recommend.

ferskner Oooooooo historical NYC! 5y
Librarybelle Haha! I really need to read books two and three! And @ferskner - you need to read this series! 5y

Finished this last night before I went to sleep. This series is set in the late 1800s. Prudence and Geoffrey have set up a detective agency, very unusual to have a female detective in charge! The story develops around a " Jack the Ripper" copycat that takes place on the streets of NYC. They are racing against time, trying to find the killer before any more women are murdered. This is book number 2
3.5 ⭐️

Lynnsoprano Have you read Murder on Black Swan Lane? Based on the description of this, I think you‘d enjoy it (and I have a copy that needs a good home😊) 5y
Crazeedi @Lynnsoprano no I have not! I'm traveling to my daughters for medical emergency tomorrow but when I get home I have something to send to you too. Sorry I haven't done it sooner. I've had anxiety about my girl and am just not on top of my game . Talk soon. Thank you so much 5y

I really LOVE this series! This is the second of three so far, and they‘ve all been top-notch! Here, a Ripper-like murderer strikes in New York. There are twists and turns and murder scenes not for the squeamish. 🤭 Great writing and character development, dark and macabre scenes and even a flea-ridden mangy street mutt named Blossom to save the day...what‘s not to ❤️?! Hope there‘s more of these to come! 4.5/5⭐️
