David Bowie's Low
David Bowie's Low | Hugo Wilcken
5 posts | 3 read | 4 to read
"One day I blew my nose and half my brains came out." Los Angeles, 1976. David Bowie is holed up in his Bel-Air mansion, drifting into drug-induced paranoia and confusion. Obsessed with black magic and the Holy Grail, he's built an altar in the living room and keeps his fingernail clippings in the fridge. There are occasional trips out to visit his friend Iggy Pop in a mental institution. His latest album is the cocaine-fuelled Station To Station (Bowie: "I know it was recorded in LA because I read it was"), which welds R&B rhythms to lyrics that mix the occult with a yearning for Europe, after three mad years in the New World. Bowie has long been haunted by the angst-ridden, emotional work of the Die Brucke movement and the Expressionists. Berlin is their spiritual home, and after a chaotic world tour, Bowie adopts this city as his new sanctuary. Immediately he sets to work on Low, his own expressionist mood-piece.

It's absolute fact! Mine include a Ziggy shirt, an Aladdin Sane shirt and (my favourite) the picture of David as Thomas Jerome Newton from the "Low" album cover ??‍?

Palimpsest Nice! 5y
Weaponxgirl I am that person and unfortunately I only own the one right now....must fix this! (Also a worm from the labyrinth T-shirt but I am told that doesn‘t count) 5y
Bookwomble @Weaponxgirl Who's telling you it doesn't count? It's definitely a Bowie-adjacent t-shirt 😁 5y

A fascinating look behind the making of one of Bowie's best albums, and one of my all-time favourites. A fusion of innovative, spikey pop-rock on one side, avant garde art-rock on the other, a perfect album cover image of an artist at the top of his game, and on the verge of disintegration. Wicken does a great job of catching the febrile atmosphere of Bowie's creative process.

Leftcoastzen Love that album, need to read this. Like the “deep dive” this series does on particular albums. 6y
Bookwomble @Leftcoastzen It's idiosyncratic at times - one person's take which you can either identify with or not recognise, but I guess that's part of the charm of reviews (which this is basically an extended form of). 6y

Extra time off work = extra reading time. I enjoyed this, though Wilcken's overuse of the word "autistic" to describe Bowies's recording process, lyrics, friendships, etc got really frustrating and annoying.

If you love music, then you may enjoy the
33 1/3 series of books based on popular classic albums. Being a huge Bowie fan, I had to dive in. Super quick read and recommended. Quite a few albums to choose from as well!

CherylDeFranceschi I love this series! Ive read quite a few of them. 8y
