Coming Race | Edward Bulwer Lytton Lytton
post image

🎶Look out at your children
See their faces in golden rays
Don't kid yourself, they belong to you
They're the start of The Coming Race
The earth is a bitch, we've finished our news
Homo Sapiens have outgrown their use
All the strangers came today
And it looks as though they're here to stay🎶

One of the many literary references to be found amongst DB's lyrics. Lytton's book was influential in its time, his concept of a life force, Vril, 👇🏼

Bookwomble ...creating quite a stir amongst not only occultists like Helena Blavatsky, The Hermetic Order of the Golden Dawn, and Alistair Crowley, but also amongst the public at large. Its most long-lived cultural legacy is probably little recognised today, being the beefy jam formerly known as Johnson's Liquid Beef, but renamed to cash in on the book's popularity as Bovril, literally "Cow-power" ⚡?⚡ 3mo

October Country | Ray Bradbury

"More murders are committed at 92° Fahrenheit than any other temperature. Over 100, it's too hot to move. Under 90, cool enough to survive. But right at 92° lies the apex of irritability, everything is itches and hair and sweat & cooked pork. The brain becomes a rat rushing around a red-hot maze. The least thing - a word, a look, a sound, the drop of a hair and - irritable murder. Irritable murder - there's a pretty & terrifying phrase for you."

Bookwomble I knew this "92°" theory from the Siouxie song on Tinderbox, and wondered whether Ray's story, "Touched by Fire", was where it started. Siouxie' s song starts with a dialogue clip from the film "It Came from Outer Space", and a quick search showed it was released 1953, whereas Ray's story was published 1954, so maybe, I thought, he borrowed from the screenwriter? Yes! he did - a screenwriter called Ray Bradbury! So are urban legends born ? 6mo

"The Beatles Illustrated Lyrics" is one of my favourite art books - a stunning variety of visual interpretations of their songs, together with John's, Paul's and George's lyrics, and snippets of interviews. The perfect companion to what is, I think, my favourite Fab Four compilation album, "The Beatles Ballads".

Maigret is on the Côte d'Azure, feeling too hot, with a head full of cotton wool, feeling an affinty with the victim whose murder he's investigating, and a certain amused disgust with the deceased's household. Maigret seems to have an affection for the underdog, those abused by society, and a dislike of pretension and bourgeois mores which I find rather endearing (though, ironically, that sentiment strikes me as pretentious and bourgeois!).

Bookwomble Accompanied by coffee and Jonathan Richman, appropriately singing "That Summer Feeling" ☕? #booksandmusic #booksandcoffee 8mo
Nute I think that we can state a dislike for pretension without sounding pretentious, right?😂 8mo

Bookwomble @Nute My tendency to overthink with myself! 😏 The mug is a favourite, with Samuel Butler's quote on the other side: “Books are like imprisoned souls till someone takes them down from a shelf and frees them.” 8mo
Nute Chill out, my friend. Overthinking is overrated!😏 I am truly amusing myself today!😅 8mo

Euripides: Bacchae | Euripides

These are a likely pairing: Euripides' "Bacchae", centring upon the god Dionysus, and the Dead Can Dance album, "Dionysus", the first act of which has a movement called "Dance of the Bacchantes". Read-Listen-DrinkTea!

Ahh - a 'new' Nico album! ??? "On the Radio", from an unnamed session, but being from 1971, I think it may be from John Peel's show. Paired with James Young's clearly misnamed (but nonetheless brilliant) biography, "Songs They Never Play on the Radio".
Young's portrayal is of a, shall we say "difficult", person to be with. Young toured with Nico in the '80s as part of her support band, The Faction, so he was at Nico Ground Zero!

Dead Can Dance's album "Within the Realm of a Dying Sun" seems to be an appropriate accompaniment to a reading of "The Undead". ☠?‍♂️??‍♀️
